Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating Meals Contain No Harmful Food Dyes
Company prides itself with not using food dyes for the past 23 years
June 06, 2008 // Franchising.com // Ottawa, Ill. -- Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating (SSHE) prides itself with not using food dyes in its meals and has done so for the last 23 years since the company's inception. Food dyes are potentially dangerous ingredients that are not needed in a healthy diet, however they are found in many foods today. This week the consumer health advocacy group, Center for Science in the Public Interest, petitioned the Food and Drug Administration to ban eight widely used food dyes: Yellow 5, Red 40, Blue 1, Blue 2, Green 3, Orange B, Red 3 and Yellow 6. All of which are not in any of SSHE's meals and have never been, along with artificial sweeteners.
SSHE Founder and President, Seattle Sutton, RN, BSN, began the company under the premise of helping people eat healthy without any of the potentially harmful food dyes found in many convenience, prepared foods. SSHE is a back-to-basics approach of freshly prepared, delicious food without food dyes. Sutton wouldn't have it any other way.
"I've had a strict policy that food dyes and artificial sweeteners are not included in any of my meals since day one. That's dating back to 1985 when I started my mission to help people eat healthy, balanced meals. And, years before I started the company, I used to cringe when I'd see children eating colorful candy knowing it contains food dyes. Research has shown that food dyes may cause bladder cancer in animals. Can you imagine a small amount can be harmful and we still serve food containing these dyes to our children? It's outrageous," said Sutton.
"Years ago, I inquired with the government about how to go about getting food dyes removed from foods and was informed it was too difficult to do once they've been deemed safe to use," continued Sutton.
Sutton keeps a very close eye on medical research pertaining to harmful food dyes. She evaluates studies and believes that one must be very careful, since there's a lot of information out there to sort through. Sutton advocates that more food safety studies need to be conducted, since the Food and Drug Administration has long deemed them safe for consumption. Sutton feels that perhaps then the safety of food dyes will be evaluated and eventually their use will cease like they have been in other countries.
