Cousins Subs to Sponsor World Series in Appleton

August 06, 2008 // Franchising.com // Menomonee Falls, WI – It's official: For the first time ever, the World Series is coming to Appleton, Wis. next summer. The Babe Ruth World Series, that is.

Even though the Babe Ruth League, Inc. is not the big leagues, with more than one million players world wide, it's truly a big league. For the hundreds of 14 year-olds who will be playing in the 2009 World Series in August at the USA Youth Sports Complex in Appleton, it's going to be perhaps the most memorable experience of their young lives.

"When I found out the Babe Ruth World Series was going to be held in Appleton I knew we wanted to get involved," said Kim Seidler, who owns and operates a store on Northland Avenue in Appleton with her business partner Krista Alf. "On August 7th our store and two others in the area are going to meet with people from the Babe Ruth League to strategize about how we can help."

"Cousins Subs will be the official sub sandwich during the world series," confirmed Pete Nelson, the host president of the Babe Ruth 14-Year-Old World Series who resides in Appleton. "They will be helping us to raise funds, which will be used for paying the Babe Ruth League fee, hotel rooms for managers and coaches, transporting the teams from Milwaukee to Appleton, as well as our Banquet of Champions and other costs."

Seidler said Cousins Subs stores in Appleton and Neenah will help raise funds for the World Series. Nelson estimated that hosting the Series will cost about $100,000.

The Babe Ruth League, Inc. is the premier amateur baseball program in the world. The league has grown steadily since its inception 55 years ago, when it consisted of a 10 team league in Hamilton Township, N.J. Today the league consists of over 1,035,123 players on some 56,622 teams in more than 9,113 leagues world wide. Like the big leagues, the Babe Ruth League uses standard sized baseball diamonds.

According to Larry Weissman, vice president of marketing for Cousins Subs, helping stores to support their local communities is part of Cousins corporate philosophy.

"Working with the Babe Ruth World Series is a win-win situation for everybody. The league is known for developing positive life skills among its participants, and holding the Series in Appleton will definitely be a boon for the local economy."

Cousins Subs is based in Milwaukee, Wis., and is a national sub sandwich chain with stores throughout the Midwest and on the West Coast. The tradition of Cousins Subs started in 1972, when two transplanted cousins from Atlantic City saw the need for an East coast–style sub shop in their new hometown. They patterned their subs after the hoagie, grinder, hero and sub sandwiches they enjoyed back East. And with a dedication to delivering quality subs at fair prices, they opened their first restaurant. From the start, the two used bread baked fresh every morning and insisted on using only the finest, freshest ingredients.
