1-800-GOT-JUNK? Holds Eight-State Truck Relay to Bring Laptops to Washington D.C. for Charity

Washington, DC, // PRNewswire // - At least a dozen 1-800-GOT-JUNK? franchise partners have collected more than 150 laptops and are currently 'relaying' them across states to bring them to a charity in Washington D.C. Project Red Dot refurbishes semi-new laptops and donates them to schools and orphanages in Africa.

Project Red Dot, a registered non-profit organization, is the brainchild of Washington D.C. 1-800-GOT-JUNK? franchise partners, Mark and Claudine Rubin. The idea is to use connections to get things done. So, the Rubins invited regional franchise partners to begin stockpiling laptops collected during junk removal jobs.

More than 150 laptops have been collected! Now, in a coordinated effort spanning eight states, each franchise partner is driving to the edge of their territory, transferring laptops to the neighboring partner until all laptops reach Washington. D.C.

"This is unprecedented in our company," says Shaye Hoobanoff, PR Manager with 1-800-GOT-JUNK?. "Franchise partners are so excited to be involved with this great charity because it helps disadvantaged people and it gives old laptops a second life."

Project Red Dot, founded in Dec. 2007, has already sent two shipments of laptops via existing reputable aid organizations to countries in Africa. All laptops are reconditioned to top working order by students at the YTI Career Institute in Mechanicsburg, PA.

"We're really happy with how quickly we've seen results since starting the organization," says founder, Mark Rubin. "As soon as we saw pictures of school kids using our donated laptops we knew we were making a difference."

The dual-pronged relay starts in Boston and Virginia Beach and will make its way to Washington, D.C. by December 16th.
