CARLSBAD, Calif. (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) -- Gold River residents donated $3,000 on June 2nd to their local school, Gold River Discovery Center, during a pre-opening fundraiser held at the new Rubio's Fresh Mexican Grill in Gold River. In lieu of paying at the register, diners were encouraged to contribute money to the Gold River school, understanding that 100 percent of donations went directly to them. Rubio's showed its support by allowing participants to order any menu item free of charge throughout the two-hour event.
"What a fantastic night the Gold River community had at Rubio's pre-opening event," said Megan Hansen, Vice Principal at Gold River Discovery Center. "Everyone had a fantastic time, the food was fabulous, and the staff out did themselves. It is clear that Rubio's is a company that wants to be part of the community. The generosity and support they have already shown Gold River Discovery Center is remarkable. We look forward to many more events, and of course great food, from Rubio's."
At 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 3rd, the new restaurant's doors permanently opened to Rubio's fans in Gold River who crave the Baja-inspired food in the relaxed yet festive atmosphere of coastal Mexico. The menu features Rubio's World Famous Fish Tacos(R), Grilled Gourmet Tacos(SM), the Big Burrito EspeciaL(SM) with chargrilled chicken or steak, freshly-made salads and Rubio's proprietary HealthMex(R) line of tacos and burritos, which are under 700 calories, less than 30 percent of which come from fat.
"Rubio's fans came out in droves for our Gold River store opening," said chairman and co-founder Ralph Rubio. "Not only were we happy that people enjoyed the great food Rubio's offers, but Gold River Discovery Center came away with needed funds that will sustain their excellent school programs and staff. We're glad we could support such an important part of the Gold River community."
The Gold River Rubio's will employ 30 team members from the local community. It is the 10th Rubio's in the Sacramento Area in addition to Elk Grove, three Sacramento locations, Folsom, Rancho Cordova and three Roseville locations.
Bold, distinctive, Baja-inspired food is the hallmark of Rubio's Fresh Mexican Grill(R). The first Rubio's was opened in 1983 in the Mission Bay community of San Diego by Ralph Rubio and his father, Ray Rubio. Rubio's is credited with introducing fish tacos to Southern California and starting a phenomenon that has spread coast to coast. In addition to chargrilled marinated chicken, lean carne asada steak, and slow-roasted pork carnitas, Rubio's menu features seafood items including grilled mahi mahi and shrimp. Guacamole and a variety of salsas and proprietary sauces are made from scratch daily, and Rubio's uses canola oil with zero grams trans fat per serving. The menu includes tacos, burritos, salads and bowls, quesadillas, HealthMex(R) offerings which are lower in fat and calories, and domestic and imported beer in most locations. Each restaurant design is reminiscent of the relaxed, warm and inviting atmosphere of Baja California, a coastal state of Mexico. Headquartered in Carlsbad, California, Rubio's operates, licenses or franchises more than 200 restaurants in California, Arizona, Colorado, Utah and Nevada.
In its 17th year of operation Gold River Discovery Center is a preschool through eighth grade school which was recognized as a California Distinguished School in 2007 for the second time and was honored as a National Blue Ribbon School in 1998.
