Local Restaurateurs Robert And Kandi Owens To Bring Corner Bakery Cafe To East Texas And North Louisiana

RKO Bakeries, LLC. to Open Eight Corner Bakery Cafes over the Next Five Years

October 29, 2010 // Franchising.com // Dallas, Texas – Corner Bakery Cafe continues to expand its presence in Texas and Louisiana through a newly announced franchise agreement with RKO Bakeries, LLC. to open eight locations in East Texas and North Louisiana during the next five years. Their first cafe will be located in Tyler, Texas and will open in 2011. Five additional Texas locations are planned for Longview, Texarkana, Bryan/College Station, Beaumont and Port Arthur, along with two Louisiana locations planned for Shreveport and Bossier City.

"Kandi and I have called Tyler home for almost 30 years and are deeply committed to our community. I know Corner Bakery Cafe shares this same commitment to the neighborhoods they serve," said Robert Owens, president and owner of RKO Bakeries, LLC. "Combined with a passion for fresh, made-to-order food, Corner Bakery Cafe is the perfect partner to help us bring a premier fast casual dining experience to our friends and neighbors in East Texas."

"Robert and Kandi have strong roots in the area and decades of experience in the restaurant business, making them ideal partners for expanding into the East Texas and North Louisiana region," said Bob Hartmann, vice president of real estate and franchise development at Corner Bakery Cafe. "We look forward to working with them to grow our presence in Texas and into Louisiana."

RKO Bakeries, LLC. expects to open its first Corner Bakery Cafe location in Tyler, Texas in the second half of 2011. The remaining seven planned cafes will be located in five other East Texas cities including Longview, Texarkana, Bryan/College Station, Beaumont and Port Arthur and two Louisiana locations in Shreveport and Bossier City. With the RKO Bakeries, LLC. partnership, CBC Restaurant Corp. has signed development agreements representing over 175 committed franchise locations, more than doubling the current Corner Bakery Cafe system in the next four years.

Along with wife Kandi Owens, vice president and co-owner of RKO Bakeries, LLC., Robert Owens established Traditions Restaurant in Tyler in 2000. This family-owned and operated restaurant provides an upscale family dining experience to East Texas residents, and Catering by Traditions is the largest caterer in the area. In the 23 years prior, Owens was with Luby's Cafeteria, rising through the ranks to lead and support operations for several locations in the East Texas and Northern Louisiana markets. "We have been looking for opportunities in the bakery cafe segment for a while now. Corner Bakery Cafe's warm and comfortable brand identity and positive energy is the best fit for our business," said Owens.

Known for its innovative menu featuring a wide variety of made-to-order egg scramblers and oatmeals for breakfast, flavorful sandwiches, savory panini, homemade soups and signature salads for lunch and dinner, freshly baked sweets for dessert and an extensive catering menu, Corner Bakery Cafe has been delighting guests nationwide with fresh, handcrafted selections in a welcoming and cozy atmosphere for almost 20 years. Guests can also stay connected with free Wi-Fi.

From a small bread bakery on a corner in downtown Chicago to a national cornerstone of fast casual dining, Corner Bakery Cafe opened its first location in 1991 and now operates more than 115 locations across the country. In October 2006, CBC Restaurant Corp. launched a strategic franchise development program. One of the most competitive in the industry, the program is designed to attract potential franchise partners who have relevant multi-unit restaurant experience and have received "best-in-class" recognition within the industry.
