Smiling Moose Deli Makes a Big Impression in Texas!

Record-breaking opening day reported in Midland

July 13, 2011 // Franchising.com // Colter Lange has known for years he wanted to own his own business in west Texas, so he spent time in the oil fields saving and in his spare time he researched and explored numerous opportunities. But it wasn't until two years ago, when his mother Lisa Lange was in Denver, Colorado and searching for 'comfort food' to bring her father who was staying at the VA hospital, that he actually knew the name of his new restaurant - Smiling Moose Deli. Lisa knew she was on to something the moment she read the menu, Chicken Noodle Soup and hot sandwiches were an easy choice; however, the wide variety of unique and fresh choices kept her coming back, time and again.

Located just off the loop in Midland, at the Tremont Exit, Smiling Moose Deli is right next to the newly opened Freebirds. The combination of the two new restaurants opening within a week of each other, along with the convenient location has created tremendous interest. "Midland is a community that just likes going out to eat," says Lange "we're excited to be a part of it!"

And they wasted no time in making a Texas-sized impression, breaking the franchise record for best opening day sales. Larry Hill, Franchise Director of Development, marveled that he had never seen anything quite like it. "We opened at 6:30am with a steady stream of customers, and then at one point, there was a line out the door. We never slowed down; we even had people come to the door after we had finally closed at 8pm!"

The family felt strongly about creating a place where people feel comfortable coming in, sitting awhile and relaxing with a great meal. And that great meal comes in the form of any of the uniquely fresh menu choices - hot or cold sandwiches, custom salads, breakfast sandwiches and soups. While the award-winning 'Mighty Mo' is getting a whole bunch of attention, the Lange's report that the Hot Italiano has also been hugely successful, along with a variety of vegetarian choices. A coffee bar rounds out the complete offering, and is utilized throughout the day. Interestingly, the Lange's have not yet advertised the fact that they cater to offices and events; and still, every day since they have opened, they have catered a breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Smiling Moose Deli Franchise President, Kevin Sloane gives credit to the whole Lange family for their over-the-top effort. "The whole family is hands-on, each bringing their talents to the 'dinner table'. We think they are a huge asset to the Smiling Moose Deli family, and look forward to seeing them grow."

The family's confidence in the franchise, combined with their entrepreneurial spirit, has led to their purchase of all the west Texas Smiling Deli franchising rights. They will open a total of eight locations in the region with their next two coming to Lubbock and Odessa later this year.
