October 21, 2011 // Franchising.com // PARSIPPANY, N.J. – Wyndham Worldwide Corporation (NYSE: WYN), one of the world's largest hospitality companies, has been ranked among the top 100 greenest companies in the U.S. by Newsweek magazine, and number one among hotels and restaurants.
Newsweek ranked Wyndham Worldwide number 73 on its U.S. list based on a number of criteria including the actual environmental footprint and management, which includes policies, programs, initiatives and disclosures. The report, published on October 17, also factored in Wyndham Worldwide’s reporting practices such as the Global Reporting Initiative and Carbon Disclosure Project, both of which were released by the company in 2011.
“Wyndham Worldwide has a unique opportunity to leverage our scale and adopt practices that will have a significant and lasting environmental impact around the globe,” said Stephen P. Holmes, Wyndham Worldwide chairman and chief executive officer. “We are proud to be recognized as a leader in reducing the collective global footprint and will continue to commit to conserving our natural resources and preserving our habitats.”
Wyndham Worldwide, which has more than 58 brands in nearly 100 countries, includes Wyndham Hotel Group, the world’s largest hotel company based on number of properties; Wyndham Exchange & Rentals, the world’s largest member-based vacation exchange network and marketer of serviced vacation rentals; and Wyndham Vacation Ownership, the world’s largest vacation ownership business. The company explores and adopts innovative sustainable practices through its Wyndham Green program, which focuses on sustainability by implementing environmentally-responsible practices across the globe.
“From releasing the Global Reporting Initiative and being recognized as an S&P Carbon Disclosure Index leader, to now being honored by Newsweek, this has been a milestone year for the Wyndham Green program,” said Faith Taylor, Wyndham Worldwide vice president of sustainability and innovation. “By continually evaluating and introducing sustainable practices across the globe, we have been able to make tremendous progress in a short period of time.”
This recognition is timely as Wyndham Worldwide celebrated its third annual Global Green Day celebration earlier this week. During the event, the Company and its 26,000 associates participated in educational activities and were provided access to eco-friendly products and vendor booths.
“Every associate has a voice and a role in Wyndham Green and through their innovative spirit, Wyndham Green continues to be a viable, profitable and successful program that makes a difference every day,” says Taylor.
