Bracing Your Home for the Winter Season

ProTect Painters Offers Handy Household Winterization Tips

November 02, 2011 // Franchising.com // ANN ARBOR, Mich. – As the seasons continue to change and cooler weather continues to set in, homeowners need to begin thinking about ways to prepare their home for the harsh conditions that lie ahead in the coming months. Several steps can be taken to winterize households so that homeowners aren’t paying.

“A proper painting job can greatly help homeowners protect their property against the brutal winter weather. But there are other things homeowners can do to assure their property is safe and protected this Winter season,” said Chris Ring, Vice President of Operations and Training for ProTect Painters. “While the worst weather may be a few months away, people should get a jump on their painting projects now and be prepared in advance.”

Ring offers the following tips to help homeowners prepare their home for the winter season. These tips include:

  • Caulking: Proper caulking not only helps to keep your home warm during the winter, but it can also help you save on your energy bill. Assess areas where there are air leaks and thoroughly caulk to prevent additional air loss, like around windows and doors.
  • Exposed Wood: Water from snowfall can lead to wood rot or the growth of fungus. Homeowners should plan to prep and cover any exposed wood so they won’t have to worry about spending a lot in a few months on costly wood replacement..
  • Selecting the Appropriate Paint for the Job: Homeowners have a variety of paints to choose from, whether it be acrylic latex or alkyd paints. Be sure to research and choose which paint is appropriate for the climate.
  • Proper Paint Application: When you decide to paint, be sure it isn’t too humid or cold out. These extremes in climate can cause paint jobs to be ruined after application.

“Just doing a little prep work can save homeowners a major headache come Spring. Proper preparation is key when getting ready for the Winter,” added Ring.
