Be Aware of Phishing E-mails that Appear to be from the IRS

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Liberty Tax is alerting taxpayers about the latest online phishing scam involving deceptive e-mails that appear to be sent from the IRS. This one’s titled “Canceled Tax Transfer.” Scam artists are again at work sending e-mails appearing to be legitimately from the IRS or the Treasury Department that solicit confidential information including Social Security Numbers, personal bank or credit card account information, passwords, and even passport information. This latest one claims that “your federal tax transaction recently sent from your bank account was rejected by your bank,” and urges the recipient to choose a free file company from a website that’s not the IRS website. The most important thing to remember is that the IRS never uses e-mail correspondence to request any personal taxpayer bank, credit card or other information. Liberty Tax Service will answer questions involving possible phishing instances or any tax issues.

“Often scams involve a fear factor calling the taxpayer to action, or may promise a refund. The scams are clever and may be elaborate, and may even use logos or websites that look like those of the IRS,” said John Hewitt, CEO of Liberty Tax Service.

The best practice is not to open attachments, click on any links, or divulge any personal account information associated with these bogus e-mails. Suspicious e-mails can be forwarded to phishing@irs.gov.
