College Students to Volunteer Over 1,500 Hours During Alternative Spring Break

LONDON, ON--(Marketwire - Feb 27, 2012) - For two weeks in March, 100 of College Pro Painters' college student managers and full-time staff members will participate in College Pro's 6th Annual Alternative Spring Break, traveling to Nashville where they will contribute over 1,500 volunteer hours and provide a value of $40,000 in services, equipment and materials. College Pro Painters' efforts will benefit two local organizations: Cottage Cove Urban Ministries and East Nashville Cooperative Ministry.

Many students enter college with a very strong understanding of what it means to give back to their communities, and to the greater good of the world. Despite this, the percentage of college students who volunteer is declining, reflecting an overall drop in volunteerism nationally. In 2010, 26.1% of college students around the U.S. volunteered, a percentage that is about on par with the overall percentage of Americans who volunteered that year. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, college student volunteerism peaked at 31.2% in 2004.

College Pro has helped thousands of college student entrepreneurs realize their dream of becoming small business owners over the years, and they also have been a very strong presence in the communities in which they serve, coming together to donate their time and do something good for communities across North America through a variety of corporate and local initiatives. Since 2004 alone, College Pro's Alternative Spring Break events have taken place in Oklahoma City, Denver, Spokane, Tampa, New Orleans, and, this year, Nashville, providing $900,000 overall in house painting services, equipment, and materials.

"Alternative Spring Break is a perfect example of what can happen when great people and caring companies pool together their resources and time," said Alan Murdock of the East Nashville Cooperative Ministry. "The tireless work and youthful energy and enthusiasm of College Pro Painters will make a lasting contribution to the local Nashville community."

Cottage Cove Urban Ministries and East Nashville Cooperative Ministry are organizations dedicated to respecting and educating individuals and improving the Nashville communities in which they serve. College Pro Painters will be revitalizing a facility used by Cottage Cove Urban Ministries to provide free daily educational programs to upwards of 70 children. Additionally, College Pro will be revitalizing a church and facility used by East Nashville Cooperative Ministry to feed the homeless on a daily basis.

"Our core purpose is 'together, realizing potentials' and one of our core values is to respect the individual," said College Pro's CEO Tony Valle. "Partnering with like-minded organizations gives us the opportunity to give back in communities in a much larger way, revitalizing structures that are used to educate or provide for others, giving them a chance to realize their potentials. "

The work will take place from March 7 through March 16, and College Pro's 100 student managers and full-time staff members will be driving from Illinois, Indiana, and flying from the New England area to arrive in Nashville for the March 6th start date. Students from various schools across the Midwest and New England will be participating in this event, and some of the schools that will be represented are listed here: SUNY Buffalo, Syracuse University, SUNY Oswego, University of Southern Maine, University of Vermont, UMASS Dartmouth, UCONN, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Northeastern University, Westfield State, Bentley University, University of Rhode Island, Bridgewater State, Eastern Connecticut University, Hampden Sydney College, UMASS Lowell, Northern Illinois, Northwestern, Loyola, Depaul, Lewis University, Harper College, College of Dupage, UIC, Illinois State, Bradley University, Purdue, Ball State, Indiana University, and Indiana State.
