Is Walking As Effective As Running?

Running Room Founder Sets the Pace in the Third Annual Weight Watchers Walk-It Challenge

OAKVILLE, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 31, 2012) - - Weight Watchers Canada announces the third annual Walk-It Challenge on Sunday June 3, 2012, when people from across Canada will walk a 5K at participating Running Room locations. And cheering them on will be John Stanton, founder of the Running Room, who says despite the name of his company, he thinks walking has a leg up on running in many ways.

"Despite having built my career around running, I'm not afraid to say that walking is a gentler, kinder form of exercise and it can help keep you more committed," says Stanton. This is the third year Weight Watchers Canada is partnering with fitness expert the Running Room in the event.
Exercise is one of the key pillars of the Weight Watchers approach and walking is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to get active. The Walk-It Challenge is designed to get Canadians moving by highlighting the importance of physical activity and the impact it can have on overall health.

"We don't all need to run marathons to see the impact of daily physical activity on our lives," says Paul Schiffner, General Manager, Weight Watchers Canada. "The Weight Watchers Walk-It Challenge is about inspiring Canadians to make exercise a part of their daily routine. For some walking a 5K may seem daunting but it's about taking one step at a time."

The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) recommends that adults aged 18-64 should accumulate at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous aerobic physical activity - such as brisk walking - per week, in bouts of 10 minutes or more, which can help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, certain types of cancer and osteoporosis. It can also lead to improved fitness, strength and mental health *.

The Walk-It Challenge is taking place at over 100 Running Room locations across the country and is one of Canada's largest multi-site walking events.

The 5K walking events are free and open to Weight Watchers members, Weight Watchers Online subscribers and the general public, and walkers can participate on their own or as a group.
