So, Dahn Yoga & Health Centers, Inc., a national leader in health and wellness, is providing a monthly exploration of these cultural traditions in a section of its monthly newsletter, Dahn Yoga Life. In order to help those who become acquainted with Dahn Yoga understand it better, this month’s issue explores the Korean tradition of treating food like medicine.
Traditionally, food was employed as the best way to control or prevent disease and maintain the body’s natural order. Korean food was developed based upon the Five Elements Philosophy: categorizing by flavors and colors to correspond with the liver, heart, stomach, lungs, and kidneys, and each of the five elements of energy (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water). Helping people live in tune with local environment and the cyclic energy of nature, these foods represent Korean traditional wisdom for maintaining health of body and mind.
Though one may not encounter Korean food in a Dahn Yoga class, a practitioner can glimpse the influence of Korean food culture when sampling seasonally appropriate tea at tea time. Finally, Dahn Yoga practice extends beyond the studio to enhance a practitioner’s lifestyle.
Dahn Yoga is a dynamic mind-body practice originating in Korea. Dahn Yoga classes combine stretching, flowing movement, deep breathing exercises and meditation in a simple and easy to learn format. Dahn Yoga is often taught alongside Tai Chi, Qigong and Meditation classes.
