Dateline: Waukesha, Wis, August 8th, 2012- Death by drowning is still a significant cause of death in the US and around the world, and moreover much of it preventable with proper water safety, and swimming instruction. According to the latest data and reports from the Center for Disease Control, "Every day, about ten people die from unintentional drowning. Of these, two are children aged 14 or younger".

Unfortunately, death is not the only thing to worry about, as permanent injury is also something to be concerned about. According to some Medical Pediatric experts, "More than 50% of drowning victims treated in emergency departments require hospitalization or transfer for further care (compared with a hospitalization rate of about 6% for all unintentional injuries). These nonfatal drowning injuries can cause severe brain damage that may result in long-term disabilities such as memory problems, learning disabilities, and permanent loss of basic functioning, e.g., permanent vegetative state.

Who is most at risk? Well, the research shows that nearly 80% of people who die from drowning are male, and Children ages 1 to 4 have the highest drowning rates. In 2009, among children 1 to 4 years old who died from an unintentional injury, more than 30% died from drowning. Among children ages 1 to 4, most drowning occurs in home swimming pools. Drowning is responsible for more deaths among children 1-4 than any other cause except congenital anomalies (birth defects). The main factors that affect drowning risk are lack of swimming ability, lack of barriers to prevent unsupervised water access, and lack of close supervision while swimming.

Swimtastic has recommitted to addressing this critical life and death problem by offering the best swimming curriculum, trained teachers and instructors, and maintenance of their facilities at the highest standards. Here is what a few clients say about their programs:

"Given that this is the number one most preventable death for kids under eight, this is a non-negotiable for us to do."- Steve Miller

"In case something ever does happen, they know how to get in, get out of the pool, be safe- very important. We do a lot of boating, so they have to know how to swim."- Chuck Mancini
