Huntsville, Ala. – August 31, 2012 - Three year growth of 751% landed Appleton Learning on the 2012 Inc. 5000 list earning the position of 508 and ranking number 13 in the education category. Inc. has celebrated the fastest growing private companies in America for over 30 years and now Appleton joins the ranks of such notable companies like Under Armour, Microsoft, Pandora and Oracle.
For 26 year old CEO, Glenn Clayton, ranking number 508 on the Inc. 5000 is a humble reminder of the days he spent sleeping on a couch at his friends and family so he could save and invest money in his start up, Appleton Learning, eight years ago.
“I’m fortunate be to surrounded by talented individuals who share my passion for growing Appleton and changing the way the world learns,” said Glenn Clayton. “Our goal is to challenge the status quo in learning and help be a disruptive force for improving education.”
Their growth, according to Clayton, is attributable to the organization’s appeal to the 21st Century Learner. Appleton does this by focusing on academic coaching and individualized learning in a high-tech environment with a modern design flare. If you walk into an Appleton Branch, you’ll find a trendy design packed with the latest technology and hip instructors wearing faded Appleton T’s. Appleton using interactive whiteboards, tablets, and every branch is equipped with a telepresence system to allow for collaboration of educators and students from across the country in real time. All of this couldn’t be farther from the traditional “tutoring center”.
“Education has changed and continues to evolve,” Clayton said. “Students in our modern, digital world demand a different type of education, one that gives them the freedom to engage in the learning process their own way. We’re not afraid to be that disruptive force that challenges the traditional way things have been done in our schools and in one-on-one learning environments.”
Appleton is far from traditional. The company pioneered the use of psychology in the learning environment and created the first personality assessment for students, called geniuStyle™. They are also on the cutting edge of technology and personalized learning…buzz words in today’s education journals.
What’s next for Appleton? With 10 locations open across the southeast, 50 franchise branches under development, and contracts with large school systems, the company’s footprint is quickly expanding to cover the region and the nation.
“Several years ago I attended my high school’s graduation ceremony and a student approached me to say ‘thank you’. He told me that because of Appleton he walked across the stage to get his high school diploma,” said Clayton. “Talk about goose bumps. That student and so many others motivate me and it’s to their credit that Appleton has been recognized on the 2012 Inc. 5000 at number 508.”
