Dollar Stores Prepare for Holiday Season, Offer Huge Discounts on Toys

Dollar General was the first to publically announce discounts on toys leading up to the holiday season, many independently owned dollar stores have already began selling at discounted prices or are planning to, DRSS reports.

Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) October 04, 2012 - Dollar General, one of the largest franchise dollar stores in the country, announced its plans to offer discounts of 10% when $75 or more in toys are purchased from one of their locations. This announcement was made on September 29, and they have expressed plans to continue this discount through Christmas Eve.

Dollar stores have gained in popularity in a struggling economy. Dollar General announced at the beginning of the year that they planned to open 600 stores, Family Dollar 300, according to a New York Times articleand an emerging leader in non-franchise independently owned dollar store development, Dollar Store Services, estimates they have opened over a thousand dollar stores, according to the company. The New York Times article cited states that financial anxiety has in large part driven the increase in the popularity of dollar stores, and it also notes that many more dollar store shoppers are within the middle income bracket than in the past. Lower income brackets still make up the majority of dollar store shoppers, at 42%.

In anticipation of a busier Holiday Season Dollar General announced new discounts to attract more shoppers looking for toys. Additionally other dollar stores, including independently owned dollar stores not associated with chain stores, will have various Holiday specials. Sources from Dollar Store Services, the largest developer of independently owned non-franchise dollar stores, believes that independent owners may hold an advantage due to their ability to undersell chains and franchises since there are no franchise fees and they have none of the overhead of large franchise retailers.
