Lincoln Senior Care Company Sponsors Senior Anti-Fraud Seminar with Ryan Sothan of the Nebraska Department of Justice

Ryan Sothan will offer expertise from the Department of Justice at Home Care Assistance of Lincoln’s Senior Anti-Fraud Education Session as part of community education outreach.

Lincoln, NE (PRWEB) November 01, 2012 - Home Care Assistance, North America’s premier provider of in-home care, is proud to announce that its Lincoln location will be sponsoring an event to increase awareness on how to detect and avoid scams and fraud aimed at seniors. The event will be held Wednesday, November 14th with an AM and PM session to make the information accessible to everyone in the community.

As the senior population continues to grow at an unprecedented rate, they are becoming prime targets for con artists. Seniors are more likely to own their own homes, tend to expect honesty especially from a business standpoint, are less likely to take action if they are victims of fraud and are generally less knowledgeable about their rights in the marketplace. Nationwide, scams against seniors are generating billions of dollars each year for criminals. These scam artists believe that senior citizens are vulnerable and naïve. This local information session is a way to help seniors in the Lincoln area become more shrewd and savvy.

“Whenever I mention that seniors are often the prime targets of fraud to someone, they in turn tell me of someone they know who has been a victim of a scam,” says Lee Nyberg, Director of Marketing at Home Care Assistance-Lincoln. “At Home Care Assistance, our mission is to change the way the world ages and one way we do that is through community education initiatives. This particular cause is near and dear to my heart and this information session is a chance to be proactive, arm your family and yourself with awareness, and stop these thieves.”

Elder financial abuse scammers can be difficult to identify—many have paperwork with forged signatures and seals—so becoming familiar with the most common scams is key. As consumer outreach coordinator at the Nebraska Attorney General’s office, Ryan Sothan will discuss foreign scams, telemarketing, sweepstakes and internet frauds. He will focus largely on ways to identify scams, but will also provide information on best practices if you or a loved one suspects foul play. The event will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2110 Sheridan Blvd. The AM session is 10:00 AM – 11:15 AM in the Fellowship Hall and the PM session will take place from 6:45 PM - 8:00 PM in the Parlor. Refreshments will be provided at both sessions. To RSVP please contact Nikki with Home Care Assistance of Lincoln at 402-261-5158.
