Rainbow International Offers Tips to Prevent Ice Dams During Severe Winter Weather

Ice dams can cause major damage to homes and businesses, and are often signs of serious problems with the roof and/or attic. Learn how to prepare your roof so your home won't fall victim to winter's fury and an expensive repair bill.

(PRWEB) December 03, 2012 - Rainbow International® reminds homeowners to winterize their home early to protect their pocketbooks from the damage winter could leave behind with severely low temperatures.

In order to prevent an ice dam keep the roof cold with better insulation and attic ventilation. Any other methods will be temporary fixes, and until this process is done you will continue to experience ice dams. In states with frequent cold weather temperatures, attic insulation should be at least 12 inches deep. Make sure this insulation is installed correctly and has no gaps between spaces. Check and make sure the attic heating ducts are as far as possible from the roof. Also, check around chimneys, light fixtures, bathroom fans and any other area where heat can escape upwards.

Lastly, evaluate your attic’s ventilation system and find inlet and outlet vents. Are these adequate? If not, you should consider installing a continuous soffit and ridge ventilation system that will do all the work for you with no fans or wires. If you already have an ice dam on your roof, your best strategy is to sit it out and wait for the ice to melt away. Then, you should focus on preventing future dams by making the improvements described previously.

Before you decide to chip away at an ice dam yourself, know that it's not recommended, and best left to a professional. You could seriously injure yourself by slipping on an icy roof. If you must inspect the ice dam up close, use a ladder and beware of falling debris. Also, forcibly dislodging chunks of ice could easily damage your roof and gutters, worsening your leakage problem.
