TORONTO, December 5, 2012 – The Royal LePage Shelter Foundation has won the Communitas Award for its signature event, the National Garage Sale for Shelter. A program of the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP), the Communitas Awards recognize exceptional businesses, organizations and individuals for excellence in community service and corporate social responsibility and for changing the way they do business to benefit their communities. The Royal LePage Shelter Foundation is the only Canadian recipient of this international award in 2012.

The National Garage Sale for Shelter is held annually on the Saturday of Mother’s Day weekend. Organized by Royal LePage brokers, agents and staff at hundreds of Royal LePage offices across the country, the event has raised $1.2 million since 2009 and is the largest one-day charity garage sale in Canada. All funds raised by Royal LePage offices remain in their local community and because Royal LePage covers the Shelter Foundation’s administrative costs, one hundred percent of all funds raised support women’s shelters and violence prevention programs in every province.
Thousands of Royal LePage brokers, agents and staff support the Shelter Foundation by making commission donations and hosting fundraising events like the National Garage Sale for Shelter. Communitas Award judges found that the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation clearly exhibits the spirit of communitas - people coming together for the good of a community.
