Giant Tiger Celebrates International Women's Day by Honouring Three Amazing Women

OTTAWA, ONTARIO -(Marketwire - March 8, 2013) - In celebration of International Women's Day Giant Tiger Stores Limited is pleased to announce the winners of our International Women's Day Contest.

Giant Tiger ran a Facebook contest inviting people to submit an essay on a woman in their life whom they believe should be honoured as the Giant Tiger International Woman of the Year. Each recipient won a Giant Tiger gift card as well as a Dove gift basket. Additionally a $1,000 donation to the CURE Foundation has been made on behalf of the winners.

"We received a ton of entries for this contest," said Lauren Moir, Vice President of Marketing for Giant Tiger, "and yet we were not surprised by the volume of entries submitted. There are so many amazing Canadian women out there. I personally read every essay submitted and it was an honour to get to know these phenomenal women."

Giant Tiger's International Woman of the Year: Eleanor Dean of Scarborough, Ontario:

Eleanor was chosen for her strong spirit at such a young age and her unwavering commitment to her family. She exemplifies the meaning of selflessness through a love of others before herself. Faced with choices life had given her, she reacted with strength beyond her years and continues to do so. The gift she gave her sister is palpable in the essay that was submitted and we are very pleased to award Eleanor with our first prize in the "Giant Tiger Woman of the Year" contest.

2nd place winner: Hilda Doetzel of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Our 2nd place prize is posthumously awarded to Hilda. Hilda was chosen as a very powerful example of true Canadian grit and determination. Hilda possessed a strong pioneer work ethic and a love of family. She is an inspiration to us all.

3rd place winner: Betty Barry of Derby Junction, New Brunswick

Betty was chosen for her winning and ever present spirit. At 81 she has not let the world pass her by, she has embraced it! Betty is well known in her hometown for her smile and positive outlook on life. Betty's daughter and nominator, describes her as the rock of the family. Betty's love of family, friends and community shines in everything she does.
