Amramp Keeps Faneuil Hall Accessible to All

Boston-based, national company installs massive wheelchair ramp during elevator upgrades.

March 15, 2013 // Franchising.com // BOSTON – Rather than closing all of its upper-level shops for more than a month while its elevators were undergoing upgrades, Boston’s landmark Faneuil Hall came up with a better solution for making all shopping levels of its Commerce Center Mall accessible to visitors of every mobility level. They found the answer they were looking for in America's leading wheelchair ramp installer, Boston-based Amramp.

Rain or shine, 100,000 people visit historic Faneuil Hall every day. The pressure was on for Amramp to quickly deliver a fast, safe, high-quality installation. With fully stocked warehouses across the country, Amramp is able to install most wheelchair ramps within 48 hours.

Faneuil Hall’s installation started within 48 hours, but this project was significantly larger and more complicated than most. The elevation from the first to the second floors is 14'8", which requires a ramp length of 174 feet, in accordance with the Americans With Disabilities Act.

Amramp received the call on a Thursday, and by Saturday, a team was already out staging the future ramp and determining the engineering blueprints. The installation crew logged 12-hour days, starting at 6 a.m. The massive structure was completed on Friday by 2 p.m., ready to accommodate shoppers and visitors.

Amramp ramps have patent-pending modular design, and materials are extremely strong, durable, and weather-resistant. Amramp ramps have built-in grips and are project-ready and customized to suit various applications, from homes and stages to stadiums and shopping malls. For the Faneuil Hall job, Amramp was able to provide all necessary components and materials in-house, requiring no extra pieces, despite the unusually long and elevated ramp. Amramp also prides itself on the professionalism, efficiency, and courtesy of its employees.

"I am so very proud to be associated with this team of dedicated people," says Amramp President and Founder Julian Gordon. "Faneuil Hall is a perfect example of how historic buildings can remain functional for everyone all of mobility levels, especially when mechanical features like an elevator are not working. An Amramp wheelchair ramp works rain or shine, and especially well in snow with a steel-mesh platform that disperses precipitation.”

Home to more than 100 high-end shops and dining establishments and one of Boston’s top tourist destinations, Faneuil Hall hosted the original signers of the Declaration of Independence before they went to Philadelphia in 1776.
