Indoor Air Quality Effects Health, Safety

Aire Serv LLC President Offers Expert Tips on How to Create a Clean Air Space

Waco, TX (PRWEB) March 22, 2013 - According to the American Lung Association, common indoor air pollutants such as radon, molds, pet dander, pollen, lead dust and asbestos are just a small fraction of the agents that can cause health risks. The Environmental Protection Agency lists poor indoor air quality as the fourth largest environmental threat to the United States.

The air consumed in homes and workplaces is generally worse than most people believe, leading to health risks ranging from mild to severe. The effects of poor indoor air quality, often caused by moisture, pets, poor ventilation, and unmaintained air conditioners and humidifiers, can range from headaches and congestion to respiratory issues and asthma.

“The key to reducing the effects of poor air quality is controlling the factors polluting the air we breathe,” states Doyle James, president of Aire Serv LLC. “Limiting the causes and maintaining proper ventilation in enclosed areas will help increase the cleanliness of your air quality.”

James suggests eliminating smoking in the home, having your home tested for radon levels, immediately repairing water leaks and removing the resulting moisture. Airing your house out periodically and maintaining proper ventilation will help maximize the quality of breathable air.

In addition to the health threats, poor indoor air quality leads to structural degradation and instability. Common issues include structural rot, mold growth, ice dams, and musty odors.

“It’s important, especially after a winter of closed doors and windows, to remove any lingering pollutants and find ways to keep them from returning,” says James. “For people with allergies, I recommend they consider a heat recovery ventilator (HRV), which allows them to get fresh air through the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system while avoiding losing or gaining heat from your space.”
