Celebrity Chef and Star Athletes Team Up to Surprise A.C.E. High School with $25,000 Fitness Studio
STAMFORD, Conn. - April 23, 2013 - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Westin Hotels & Resorts concluded its month-long, star-studded “Make Monday Better” gifting spree, this time targeting both the students and teachers of the Academy for Conservation and the Environment in Canarsie, Brooklyn. Celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito and pro athletes Justin Tuck of the New York Giants and LaTroy Hawkins of the New York Mets pitched in to present the high-needs school with a newly renovated, $25,000 fitness studio. The celebrity trio then surprised more than 30 teachers and faculty members with Westin Weekend getaways.
Westin partnered with HealthCorps, a not for profit organization co-founded by Dr. Mehmet Oz and his wife Lisa, and DiSpirito to speak to the importance of health and wellness through nutrition, offering accessible eating tips to inspire students to make healthier choices. Tuck and Hawkins arrived on the scene to continue the message of wellness through exercise, unveiling the new facility filled with equipment including a Life Fitness strength machine, weight racks, benches, resistance bands and exercise balls. The athletes also gifted the school’s teachers with Westin weekend vacations as a thank you to their commitment to education.
The surprise gifting moment at A.C.E. High School completed the series of three consecutive events designed to “Make Monday Better” for unsuspecting, often unsung heroes, and to mark the global rollout of the brand’s new Westin Weekend program. Earlier this month, actor Mark Consuelos dropped in on hundreds of nurses at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City and presented them with Westin Weekend getaways, while actress Emmanuelle Chriqui teamed up with Simmons Bedding Company to surprise LA County firefighters by outfitting an outdated firehouse with the brand’s iconic Heavenly® Beds. Chriqui, who arrived at FSA Camp 2 in La Cañada Flintridge in a Simmons® delivery truck, surprised the volunteers with 29 Heavenly Beds, exclusively manufactured by the bedding company.
Westin Hotels is tackling the Monday blues head-on with the introduction of a new, dedicated weekend program that gives guests more flexibility and time to make the most out of their weekend getaway. In addition to complimentary 3 p.m. late check-out on Sundays, Westin hotels are extending breakfast service hours throughout the weekend. To set the stage for the new program all Westin hotels will signal the weekend has arrived through a variety of subtle sensory cues including changes in lighting, music and décor. Each guestroom will feature the brand’s signature Heavenly Bed bathrobe placed on the bed accompanied by a list of favorite local attractions to officially welcome guests to their weekend.
