Cousins Subs® Awards $5,000 Scholarship to David Holzer of Hartford

$12,000 in scholarships presented April 18th at Wisconsin Sports Awards

MILWAUKEE (April 30, 2013) – Milwaukee-based Cousins Subs® awarded four high school students $12,000 in scholarships as part of its inaugural Wisconsin Sports Awards Scholarship Program. David Holzer of Hartford was the grand prize winner of the two male finalists, winning a $5,000 scholarship.

David has participated in cross country, swimming and golf all four years of high school. He was captain of both his cross country and swimming teams. He was named Academic All-State for his golf success. He plans to play golf at the collegiate level this fall.

David is ranked 2nd in his class and holds a perfect 4.0 grade point average. David scored an astonishing perfect 36 on his ACT exam.

He will attend St. Norbert College and plans to major in Biology. He wants to be a physician.

The other Cousins Subs scholarship $5,000 grand prize winner was Brianna Messner of Seymour, and Courtney Kalous of Menomonee Falls and Jace Simonson of Richland Center each won $1,000 scholarships. The winners were awarded at the GKB Events Wisconsin Sports Awards, Thursday, April 18th at the Harley-Davidson Museum.

“The entire Wisconsin Sports Awards experience was incredible! All of the scholarship finalists and our parents were treated like royalty,” David remarked. “Not only was I able to receive a very generous scholarship from Cousins Subs, I was also able to meet many of my biggest sports idols. The entire evening was an experience I will never ever forget, and I am deeply grateful to Cousins Subs for their generosity and commitment to bettering their community.”

The scholarships were funded through Cousins Subs’ Make It Better Foundation, a nonprofit charitable organization established by Cousins Subs earlier this year. The Make It Better Foundation addresses three areas of interest that are vital to any community: health and wellness, hunger and youth education.

“Cousins Subs has a longstanding tradition of commitment to the communities we serve,” said Christine Specht, president and COO at Cousins Subs. “We have supported a multitude of causes and organizations throughout our 41-year history. This scholarship program is an exciting addition to our support of youth education and health and wellness, and a perfect example of the kinds of programs we want to support.”

A total of 534 applications were received from throughout the state for the scholarship contest.

“All of us at Cousins were extremely impressed with the quality of the applications that were sent in,” said Justin McCoy, vice president of marketing, Cousins Subs. “To have over 500 applicants interested in our scholarship program, especially during the contest’s first year, is remarkable. We had to make some very tough decisions when choosing our winners. We are looking forward to next year’s scholarship program already.”

About Cousins Subs®

Cousins Subs® and its franchisees operate more than 140 sub sandwich shops in six states, with bold expansion plans. The first Cousins Subs was established in Milwaukee in 1972 by Bill Specht and his cousin. Their dream was to bring East Coast-style sub sandwiches to Milwaukee – with their own handcrafted touch. They started with their bread, developing a secret recipe with the perfect taste and crunch. That bread is the cornerstone of the Cousins Subs slogan, “Better Bread. Better Subs. Better Day.” The original recipe is still closely followed at every Cousins Subs store, where each sandwich is made to order using freshly sliced deli meats, cheeses, and vegetables – and the bread is baked fresh each day. Forty-one years later and still family owned, Cousins Subs employees and franchisees are driven by their mission to “Make it a Better Day” in all they do. In 2013, the brand proudly announced the establishment of the Make it Better Foundation, dedicated to funding causes that address health and wellness, hunger and youth education in the communities that Cousins Subs serves.
