Mainstream Boutique on Pace to Double System-Wide Sales and Boutique Openings in 2013

Fashion Franchise Sees Exceptional Growth with Boutique Trend on the Rise

August 07, 2013 // // APPLE VALLEY, Minn. – As boutiques gain traction across the country and begin to populate the retail landscape, the era of big-box retailers is no longer dominating the market as they fall to the trending popularity of boutiques and smaller retailers.

At the forefront of the trend, Mainstream Boutique, a women’s clothing and accessories franchise concept, is feeling the shift in shopping trends, which has translated into exponential growth in terms of system-wide sales and boutique openings around the country. Founded by Marie DeNicola in 1991 the company began franchising in 1998, growing to 22 locations in 2012 and is on pace to double in size by the end of 2013 with 35 currently signed franchise owners. System-wide sales reached $6,868,770 in 2012 and the company is expected to experience more than $10,000,000 by the end of 2013.

“With the buying power of large department stores, but the individuality of an independent boutique, we’re able to offer the best of both worlds to both owners and customers,” said DeNicola. “Unlike large department stores that have huge volumes of merchandise, our 1,500 square-foot locations have constantly updated inventory allowing customers to find new, on-trend items on a weekly basis and gives the franchise owners complete control over their product.”

The reality of the retail landscape - Big-box retail dominance is coming to an end, while boutiques are thriving. According to the latest D&B Industry Report, clothing store sales increased 15% between 2005 and 2011, however sales at the big-box department stores fell by 14%. The same report notes that boutiques have been stealing sales from department stores with more unique merchandise and better service.

“After 50 years of putting moms and pops out of business, big-box retail is having a mid-life crisis,” added DeNicola. “A slow economy has hurt same-store sales and narrowed margins at larger retailers. Meanwhile, we see consumers seeking the more intimate and unique shopping experience offered by our boutique locations.”
