Great Clips Arizona Raises $30,000 for Families of Fallen Firefighters

MINNEAPOLIS - October 1, 2013 – Great Clips is proud of our 123 Arizona salons for raising $30,000 to benefit the families of the 19 firefighters who lost their lives in the Yarnell fire. The salons each donated $1 for each hair cut given on August 3, and placed donation jars at their registers for one week.

Arizona franchisee Ken Hand organized the fundraising activities. On October 1, he personally presented the check to the 100 Club of Arizona. Joining him during the presentation were Great Clips Franchisee Amber Cepkauskas, Phoenix Great Clips Business Services Specialist Kathryn Hill, and Great Clips Salon Manager Cindy Prater who led the effort by raising more than $1,300 in her salon from customers and staff.

The 19 firefighters, members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, were killed when they were overtaken by a raging wildfire that suddenly shifted direction. They ranged in age from 21 to 43 years old. Most left behind families with small children. Two were about to become fathers.

"I was struck by not only how the community came together to help assist the families, but the entire nation reached out," said Hand. "Firefighters, police and citizens from across the country provided assistance and comfort. Vice President Biden and a host of dignitaries attended the memorial service. It reminded many of the outpouring of support after 9/11."

The statewide Arizona fundraiser is part of Great Clips’ umbrella program called Great Deeds. Through this program, Great Clips salon owners and stylists in 163 markets across North America join customers and neighbors to help their communities.

"The need is ongoing," Hand commented. "It’s not like a flood that took place where property is repaired and replaced, and people move on. There are widows with children and they need support, indefinitely. My fear is that people will forget."
