Nurse Next Door Launches in Pittsburgh to Address Demand for Senior Care

Looming family caregiver shortage drives need for private home care services.

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) October 08, 2013 - Nearly 20 percent of Pittsburgh’s population will be over the age of 65 by 2030. The demand for senior care services is escalating. To address the needs of this demographic, Nurse Next Door, a thriving North American home health care franchise system, has launched a locally owned and operated Pittsburgh location.

Nurse Next Door’s new Pittsburgh office is owned by first time entrepreneur Todd Gwin, a former medical sales manager with an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. Personal caregiving experiences made Todd aware of the gaps in available senior health care services in Pittsburgh.

"I saw the need for a home care brand in Pittsburgh that would care for seniors like family, taking care of the details and giving total peace of mind to loved ones," said Gwin. "With our aging population, it’s clear we need to re-think how we care for our elders, and Nurse Next Door’s services are proving to be a great option to keep people comfortable and in their own home. I am committed to making lives better and Nurse Next Door also provides me with the chance to give back to the Pittsburgh community."

Nurse Next Door’s home care services are going to be in high demand over the next few decades as the number of potential family caregivers continues to decrease relative to the number of people who require long-term care and support. A recent report found that between 2010 and 2050, the ratio of potential family caregivers to each person aged 80-plus will go from 7 to 1 to an all time low of 2.9 to 1.

"While caring for a loved one can be incredibly rewarding, it can also be incredibly exhausting," said Gwin. "Our focus right now is to show local families that there is an affordable option to alleviate burdening care responsibilities and keep their aging loved ones healthy and happy at home."

Nurse Next Door provides a full spectrum of home care services ranging from three hours-per-week of friendly companionship and housekeeping right through to live-in care. Currently, Nurse Next Door in Pittsburgh is licensed for companion care and anticipates receiving its skilled license in the near future.
