Wingstop Awards High School Scholar Athlete of the Month

Nathan Byrd of W.T. White High School named September Athlete of the Month

October 09, 2013 // Franchising.com // RICHARDSON, Texas – For the second time in the 2013-14 school year, Wingstop is recognizing the High School Scholar Athlete of the Month sponsored by Wingstop and KTVT CBS.

Each month, Wingstop and KTVT-TV CBS invite viewers, athletic directors, coaches and members of the community to nominate exceptional athletes from the Metroplex to receive a $1,000 scholarship from Wingstop. Nathan Byrd, a student at W.T. White High School, was selected for the month of September for his ability to excel in academia along with his athletic accomplishments. The scholarship initiative was launched in January 2012 by the Wingstop D-FW co-op, which includes more than 75 restaurants throughout the North Texas region.

"This program is intended to acknowledge students for all the hard work they do in managing their scholastic endeavors and extracurricular activities,” said Wingstop D-FW Advertising Co-op President Rex Heckelman. “Byrd is not only deserving because of his academic and athletic abilities, but he is very involved in his school’s academic clubs and the surrounding community.”

Byrd may be the starting center and long snapper for the Longhorns, but off the field he leads in academics and the community. He is currently ranked number 20 in his graduating class, he is a member of the National Honor Society and he volunteers as a math tutor. Byrd is also a member of North Dallas Young Life where he is a group leader and mentors younger students. He is an active member and usher at St. Monica Catholic Church as well as a frequent volunteer at the North Texas Food Bank, serving meals to the homeless. Byrd also volunteers on the weekends at the Town North Family YMCA coaching and refereeing youth soccer, flag football and baseball.
