Haynes and Boone Wins MCCA’s Thomas L. Sager Award for South Region

October 15, 2013 // Franchising.com // The Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) has awarded Haynes and Boone, LLP the prestigious Thomas L. Sager Award for the South Region, recognizing the firm’s commitment to the hiring, retention and promotion of minority lawyers.

"This is a tremendous validation for the creative and effective work being done every day by members of our Attorney Diversity Committee, as well as the Recruiting Department," said Terry Conner, firm managing partner. "Under their combined leadership, we continue to make great strides in fostering an environment that not only accepts, but also celebrates, the characteristics that make us truly unique and diverse individuals."

Haynes and Boone was selected as the recipient by the MCCA Board of Directors, which considered criteria including recruitment, retention, mentoring, promotion, pipeline initiatives, LGBT initiatives, women initiatives and work-life balance.

MCCA President and CEO Joseph K. West noted that "Haynes and Boone has continued to provide opportunities for all of their talent to grow and thrive, thereby making their firm stronger and more competitive. We hope the entire legal industry will follow their example." The organization highlighted the firm’s diversity efforts, such as the Women in Law Initiative and the Minority Scholars Program, in their award release.

"This is a tremendous honor and we are extremely proud to receive the award," said Felicity Fowler, co-chair of the firm’s Attorney Diversity Committee (ADC). "This award highlights more than just hiring diverse attorneys; it also focuses on mentoring and retaining talent, which is important to the firm."

ADC Co-Chair Nick Even added: "At Haynes and Boone, diversity is not just something we talk about. It’s an integral aspect of our culture. This award will galvanize our ongoing efforts to be innovative and forward-looking in our diversity programs."

The firm’s educational initiatives and other programs aimed at bolstering minority recruiting and retention are overseen by the Haynes and Boone ADC, which is comprised of 60 attorneys and members of management who meet once a month to advance the firm’s diversity efforts, including the Minority Associate Sponsor Program, the Minority Attorney Retreat and the Women’s Leadership Academy.

Haynes and Boone was honored at the MCCA’s Taste of MCCA Networking Series on Oct. 8 at the Dallas World Aquarium. The firm will also be featured in Diversity & the Bar magazine, the official magazine of the MCCA.
