GNC Congratulates Dr. Joseph C. Maroon on Finishing His 5th Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii

Noted Neurosurgeon and Head of GNC's Medical Advisory Board Shows what Training, Nutrition and Willpower Can Achieve

PITTSBURGH - Oct. 21, 2013 // PRNewswire // - GNC Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: GNC) today congratulated Dr. Joseph C. Maroon, Chairman of the GNC Medical Advisory Board, on successfully finishing his 5th Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. The noted neurosurgeon and nutrition expert, participating in the Ironman division for 70-to-74-year-old athletes, has clearly mastered what some have called the most grueling endurance race in the world – a 2.4-mile ocean swim, biking 112 miles up and down the sides of an active volcano and then a sweltering run of 26.2 miles through a lava field – all in under 17 hours!

Joseph Fortunato, GNC's Chairman, President & Chief Executive Officer, said, "On behalf of all of us at GNC, I want to congratulate Joe for his amazing achievement. He is a profound example of what an individual can accomplish, whether in sports or in simply maintaining a healthy lifestyle, at any age. In doing so, Joe truly demonstrates the power of the Live Well message!"

"Hearing the roar of the crowd upon crossing the finish line for my 5th Ironman in Kona was an amazing experience," said Dr. Maroon. "But more important to me, both as an athlete and as an individual, was the satisfaction of knowing that my training and determination to compete at this level had paid off. I can only hope that my experience will serve as a model for others who strive every day to achieve their personal best!"

Dr. Maroon is also the team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Vice Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, one of the nation's Top 10 hospitals as ranked by U.S. News & World Report, and a Heindl Scholar in Neuroscience and Professor at the Pitt School of Medicine.
