Sarah Jenkins of FaegreBD Named Indiana's Outstanding Young Lawyer

Indianapolis (18-October-2013) - Sarah Jenkins, a business litigation associate at Faegre Baker Daniels LLP, received the Indiana State Bar Association's (ISBA) 2013 Outstanding Young Lawyer award on Oct. 17.

The award, sponsored by the ISBA's Young Lawyers Section, honors an individual under 36 years of age or with less than six years of legal experience who exemplifies the virtues embodied in the Indiana Oath of Attorneys.

Jenkins was selected in part because of her pro bono representation on behalf of individuals with mental health disabilities, in collaboration with FaegreBD partner Kathy Osborn. A 2011 ruling for their client broke new ground nationally on the interpretation of constitutional due process rights afforded to those under guardianships. Jenkins works with the ISBA's Probate Review and Guardianship Registry committees on initiatives to create greater protections for and deliver care more efficiently to individuals under guardianships. She also has provided pro bono services in several contested guardianship cases.

Beyond her pro bono contributions, Jenkins has represented clients successfully in many guardianship, probate and commercial litigation matters. Beginning in 2010, she represented charitable beneficiaries as claimants in the Melvin Simon will and trust contest and negotiated the fulfillment of Simon's charitable pledges.

Jenkins is a leader in the legal profession and has played a key role in lawyer ethics issues. She serves on several ISBA committees, including as vice chair of the Probate, Trust and Real Property Section. Jenkins cultivates young talent by mentoring younger associates, judging Moot Court competitions and helping coach Indiana's We the People civics team.

"Sarah is a prime example of what an Outstanding Young Lawyer embodies," said Osborn in the nomination. "She is extraordinarily talented, compassionate and committed to the principles of the legal profession."

ISBA president Dan Vinovich presented the Outstanding Young Lawyer award to Jenkins at an awards luncheon during the ISBA's Annual Meeting.
