From Free Oil Changes To Free Meals, Businesses Say 'Thanks' On Veterans Day

Meineke Car Care Centers Offer Free Oil Change to Active or Retired Service People and their Spouses*

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Nov. 5, 2013 // PRNewswire // - It is perhaps one of the most important federal holidays, and for millions of American veterans and their families, Nov. 11 – Veterans Day – is a solemn reminder of the sacrifices so many service men and women have made for our country. There are remembrances and ceremonies honoring those who have and continue to serve. And for many businesses from Main Street to Madison Avenue, it's a day to give a small token of something back in gratitude and support of those who support us every day.

A History of Sacrifice and Honor

The day's origins stem from the date the Allied nations and Germany agreed to a temporary cease-fire on Nov. 11, 1918, leading to the end of World War I. At the time, many people believed that conflict would be "the war to end all wars," and Nov. 11 became known as Armistice Day. In 1938, the day became a legal federal holiday, and in 1954, after World War II and the Korean War made it clear that peace was a much more complex goal, the day became known as "Veterans Day."

While Memorial Day honors those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and perished during military service, Veterans Day pays tribute to all veterans, both living and deceased. Public observances vary from small town parades to an official wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns (formerly the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier) in Arlington National Cemetery.

Small Gestures from Full Hearts

While nothing can fully repay the debt owed to the men and women who serve our great nation, many local businesses do what they can to make one task easier or more affordable on Veterans Day. This year one of the many businesses offering complimentary and discounted services to honor veterans is Meineke Car Care Centers. On Monday, November 11, 2013, participating Meineke Centers will provide free basic oil changes to all veterans and active-duty military personnel, as well as spouses of deployed members. The service includes up to five quarts of standard motor oil, and a standard oil filter.

"The brave men and women of the armed forces continue to stand up for our freedom every day," says Jason Moskal, Chief Marketing Officer, Meineke Car Care Centers. "Local Meineke owners wanted to show their appreciation by giving something back to them."

Locally owned and operated, Meineke Car Care Centers are open 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. To find a Meineke Car Care Center near you, http://www.meineke.com/.
