Rainbow International® Removes Mold From Chattanooga Fire House

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Dec. 9, 2013 – Rainbow International of Chattanooga provided mold clean up for the Station 8 firehouse in Chattanooga, Tenn., after they found high levels of mold in the firehouse.

The Station 8 firehouse, located on Hickory Valley Rd., was closed on Nov. 19 to allow mold clean up crews to inspect and bid on the removal of the mold from the firehouse, which Rainbow International of Chattanooga secured.

"It’s [mold] found in several areas throughout the station," Deputy Fire Chief Randy Jacks said. "It’s more prevalent around the air ducts."

A leak in the basement air conditioner has caused past mold issues at the Station 8 firehouse. The leak was not properly taken care of and caused mold to be pulled into the air conditioner ductwork, causing a high mold level throughout the building.

"Mold can be a serious issue. You don’t want to breath high concentrations of mold," Rainbow International of Chattanooga owner, Eric Dill said. "The most important thing when dealing with mold is to identify and remove it as soon as possible."

The mold caused about $35,000 worth of damage to the firehouse with clean up at the Station 8 firehouse taking about five days.

Dill said that people are always breathing in mold, but it typically isn’t at high concentrations. As long as mold is identified and properly cleaned up it isn’t usually a problem.

Prolonged exposure to mold can include sneezing, redness and skin irritation, watery or itchy eyes, headaches and respiratory problems.

The 15 firefighters from Station 8 were temporarily relocated in Station 6, on Bonny Oaks Drive, while Rainbow International of Chattanooga worked to remove the mold from the Station 8 firehouse.
