Dentons Continues Growth of Insurance Regulatory Practice with Addition of Matthew Gaul as Partner

March 26, 2014 // Franchising.com // New York, NY - Dentons announced today that Matthew J. Gaul has joined its Insurance Regulatory practice as a partner in the New York office. He advises insurance companies and other financial institutions in government investigations and complex regulatory matters.

Gaul brings extensive experience with market conduct examinations, life insurance product regulation, financial services reform and modernization, and insurance and reinsurance transactional matters. He has recently represented a major insurance intermediary in the New York State Department of Financial Services force-placed insurance investigation and subsequent rule making, a national insurance trade group and its members in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, and a Medicaid managed care organization on the reinsurance and regulatory aspects of its nationwide alliance agreement with a major health insurance provider. He joins Dentons from Steptoe & Johnson, where he was a partner.

"Matt brings valuable first-hand insurance regulatory experience from his many years in state government," said Mike McNamara, managing partner of Dentons US. "His unique background and skill set as a former insurance regulator will be a tremendous addition to our highly ranked and regarded national Insurance Regulatory group and Insurance practice."

Gaul spent almost seven years in New York State Government. During that time, he served as the Deputy Superintendent for Life Insurance in the New York State Insurance Department (now the Department of Financial Services), Special Counsel to the New York State Commission to Modernize the Regulation of Financial Services and the Chief of the Investor Protection Bureau at the New York State Attorney General's Office.

Gaul graduated first in his law school class, earning his JD, magna cum laude, from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, and his BA, with distinction, from Yale University. Following law school, he clerked for Judge Terence T. Evans, US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and Judge John S. Martin Jr., US District Court for the Southern District of New York.
