California Couple Brings New Floors Door-to-Door

David and Sheryl Anderson Find New Life as Business Owners with Floor Coverings International

March 31, 2014 // Franchising.com // Citrus Heights, Calif. - David Anderson had thought about owning his own business for years, but the economy forced his hand. When he found himself out of work following company restructuring, he decided it was the perfect time to become the business owner he'd always wanted to be. He discovered that opportunity with his wife as his business partner when he opened his own Floor Coverings International location on Oct. 1 serving his community in Citrus Heights, El Dorado Hills, Folsom and the broader Sacramento, Calif. area.

Anderson came to America from Jamaica when he was only 12 years old and settled in Connecticut. He played soccer growing up, well enough to receive a college scholarship. He earned a bachelor's and then master's degree in accounting and began his career as an accountant before moving to information technology as an IT specialist. For the last 15 years, he worked as a technology and IT project management director for a healthcare company before restructuring made his job redundant.

"I saw it as an opportunity," he said. "I always wanted to do something on my own, and I've always been interested in home improvement so I decided to go into business for myself."

Anderson's wife, Sheryl, who became a stay-at-home mother after the birth of the second of the couple's four children, was eager to begin working again, so the couple decided to extend their partnership to business.

The Andersons researched a number of concepts before deciding to go with Floor Coverings International. "It was really about their model and their support," David explained. "Their operational and marketing models are stellar, and when we went to Georgia to meet with the team, I was just blown away. I could tell they were invested in our success, and that they grow their business by making sure we grow our business. That really sealed it for us."

Floor Coverings International is a franchised shop-at-home floor covering retailer with nearly 100 locations throughout the U.S. and Canada. The company offers more than 3,000 flooring options from the top brands in flooring at competitive prices, including carpet, hardwood, laminates, luxury vinyl, ceramic tile, area rugs and window coverings. Professional installation services are also provided.

Anderson is in the process of getting their location's contractor license while Sheryl has been working tirelessly on networking. Only operational for a short time now, they've already received great feedback from the community. "People really find our mobility attractive," David said. "They see the samples of our floors and finishes in their own homes and can immediately imagine what it would look like with their décor and furnishings. It also helps that they don't have to leave their home to get an estimate, because we come to them."

Anderson also thinks he and his wife have chosen a particularly good time to start this business, as they see the housing market picking up slowly as the economy improves. "There are more home buyers than houses for sale right now, so new construction seems to really be picking up. We feel like we got into this just as the housing market is coming back in our area, and that's just perfect timing."

If the growth and success they've been experiencing continues, the Andersons plan to add at least two additional sales associates and a project coordinator to their staff within a year, and take on additional territories within two years.
