Bob Langer Featured In FTC Watch

May 07, 2014 // Franchising.com // Wiggin and Dana Partner Bob Langer was featured in the May 1, 2014 issue of FTC Watch for the speech he gave in honor of the late Janet D. Steiger, the first female Chairman of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Janet was honored at the Federal Trade Commission's Miles W. Kirkpatrick Award Ceremony on April 17, 2014. Janet served as Chairwoman of the FTC from 1989 to 1995 and then as Commissioner until September 1997.

During his speech, Bob reflected on the positive impact that Janet had on the federal and state working relationship, commenting that, "There was a dramatic improvement in communication, cooperation and coordination of our respective activities that manifested itself in innumerable ways, including joint actions."

Bob also discussed the legacy the late Chairwoman has left behind in the form of the Janet D. Steiger Fellowship Project, which provides first and second year law students with internship opportunities in the consumer protection departments of state and territorial Offices of Attorneys General throughout the United States, as well as in other state consumer protection agencies. Bob helped create the Janet D. Steiger Fellowship Project in memory of the late Chairwoman and has served as its Chair for over ten years.

The eight-week paid Fellowships were initiated in 2004 by the ABA Section of Antitrust Law, in cooperation with the National Association of Attorneys General ("NAAG"), as a consumer protection outreach initiative to introduce law students to the rewards of legal careers in public service. More than 200 students have served as Steiger Fellows, including many who have gone on to careers in public service.
