LivHOME: Proper Senior Balance

May 14, 2014 // Franchising.com // Los Angeles – For seniors, "balance" means a lot more than simply not falling down. Physical, Psychological, Social and Spiritual Balance Should All Be Addressed, Says LivHOME’s Steve Barlam in New Podcast Episode.

Balance in its broadest sense is a general state of well-being that’s critical to maintaining seniors’ quality of life, says Steve Barlam, Chief Professional Officer at LivHOME. Barlam discusses the importance of proper balance and how seniors can achieve it in the latest episode of The Senior Care Podcast by LivHOME.

"The ability to handle life’s curveballs is key to seniors’ quality of life. Reaching the serene and balanced place where this is possible rests on attaining four key areas of well-being: physical, psychological, social and spiritual," Barlam explains.

He describes balance in each of these areas as follows:

  • Physical.
Setting aside time once or twice a year to attend to health issues rather than letting them become a dominant focus or ignoring them until a crisis hits.
  • Psychological.
Finding the most appropriate way to cope with loss and other adverse situations in order to enjoy day-to-day life and relationships.
  • Social.
Reaching the important middle ground between the impulse to withdraw due to a fear of loss and the desire to reach out to others.
  • Spiritual.
Helping seniors to find meaning in their existence and past actions.

"The concept of balance changes over time and is different for each individual. Some seniors may need extra support in the form of medication, therapy or guidance from clergy. Others may find it extremely challenging to push through the fear of connecting with family and friends. The best approach in each case can be sought by asking how a senior has achieved balance in the past and what his or her specific vision of balance is – even if it’s not what you’d expect," Barlam says.

Barlam also notes that while the concept of social balance is often overlooked, successful aging is directly related to an individual’s ability to connect with others. "The joy of connecting always outweighs its potential risks," he says.
