Louisiana State Senator Karen Carter Peterson Joins Dentons

June 05, 2014 // Franchising.com // New Orleans, LA - Dentons announced that Karen Carter Peterson has joined the Firm's leading Energy practice as counsel. Peterson, who also represents the fifth district of New Orleans in the Louisiana State Senate and serves as chair of the Louisiana Sate Democratic Party, will leverage her deep experience at the intersection of law, policy and strategy on behalf of Dentons' energy clients.

For nearly two decades, Peterson has represented clients on a variety of matters, including public utility regulatory compliance, litigation, agency rulemaking and appeals, government relations and real estate development. She also advises clients on strategic and business development and local regulatory processes.
For the past 14 years, Peterson has served in the Louisiana legislature and is the first woman chair of the state's Democratic Party. She was elected Senator in 2010 in a special election and then to a full term in 2012. Peterson is the immediate past Chair of the Louisiana Women's Caucus and the current chair of the Senate Select Committee on Women and Children. She also serves on the Senate Judiciary B, Insurance and Local Municipal Committees. Peterson previously served as a State Representative for District 93 from 1999 to 2010 and as House Speaker Pro Tempore from 2008 to 2010. While in the House, she was also the first woman to chair the House Insurance Committee.

Peterson has received numerous honors and awards in recognition of her public service. In 2013 she was voted Best New Orleans Legislator in The Gambit's annual Best of New Orleans Awards. That same year, the Louisiana Association of School Superintendents named her Legislator of the Year and the Children's Defense Fund honored her for leadership in protecting Louisiana's children. In 2012, she received the President's Award for outstanding service in the advancement of human rights by the International Association for Human Rights Agencies and the Justice for Youth Award from Juvenile Justice Project of Louisiana. Peterson is a three-time recipient of the Alliance for Good Government Legislator of the Year Award and was selected as one of two inaugural recipients of the New Frontier Award conferred by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation and the Institute of Politics at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.

Peterson earned her JD from Tulane University School of Law and her BA from Howard University.
