Father-Son Team Manages Multi-Branch California Wheelchair Ramp Installation Business

June 13, 2014 // Franchising.com // LOS ANGELES - In a world of fractured families and high unemployment among college students and recent grads, one small family business is defying the odds.

As a franchise owner of national wheelchair ramp manufacturer and installer Amramp of North America, Brett McKee is not only helping Californians stay in their homes when they face mobility challenges, like steps and standard showers, his sons are helping to grow his business.

For Father's Day 2014, Amramp is recognizing a father-son team that founded and runs both the company's Southern and Northern California franchise branches. Brett McKee is father to Brendan, 32, Patrick, 28, and Dylan, 25. The older two sons, Brendan and Patrick, joined the company in 2007 while attending community college in Los Angeles.

What started with just a few small projects using Brendan's pickup truck - a ramp installed at a local credit union, a residential home, and at a San Diego State University sorority house during Rush week - evolved into a larger business over time, thanks to the team's hard work, Google advertising, and exhibiting at case management and physical therapy conferences. By 2009, the operation expanded to Northern California, when Brendan and Patrick moved to Santa Cruz.

Now, the two older sons head up the Northern California Amramp office, while Dylan and Brett manage the Southern California one. Brett handles sales and referral calls and emails, while his sons perform site visits, evaluations, design proposals, and take the lead on installations. Their projects are often emergency calls from residential clients recently discharged with no way to get up stairs in a wheelchair or walker.

"I couldn't be more proud of the patience and empathy my sons have for the people we help," McKee said. "Driving to Nevada and installing a ramp in the dark at 10 p.m. says a lot." They also must cultivate new skills and techniques to perform larger and more complicated jobs, he said, such as installing 15-swimming pool lifts in Escondido, CA and a 41-foot ramp in Berkeley, CA.
