Woody's Bar-B-Q® Seeks Sponsors and Participants for VIP Party and Annual Spare Rib Eating Contest to Celebrate 34th Anniversary and Raise Funds for Local Charity that Serves At-Risk Children

June 19, 2014 // Franchising.com // Jacksonville - Last July, Woody's Bar-B-Q® played host to its annual Spare Rib Eating Contest to commemorate a history that spans more than 30 years while benefitting a very important non-profit organization in the city of Jacksonville, Florida where the authentic Southern barbecue franchise is based. In addition to the popular contest at a number of participating locations, Woody's Bar-B-Q hosted a ticketed VIP Party at its flagship restaurant complete with raffle and silent auction. As a result of the combined event, the national franchise raised over $14,000 for Healing Hands – the Northeast Florida Child Protection Team. This year, the chain is preparing to do it all over again – only this time, it hopes to top last year's numbers in dollars raised. On Saturday, July 26, 2014, the "Original" Woody's Bar-B-Q – located at 1638 University Boulevard in Jacksonville – will host this year's Annual Spare Rib Eating Contest and VIP Party from noon to 2 p.m. Local businesses and individuals are currently being sought to take part as either sponsors, participants or both.

There are 3 easy ways for Woody's Bar-B –Q fans to participate in the fun and help the Northeast Florida Child Protection Team at the same time:

  1. Make a $50 donation to be a sponsored rib-eating contestant.
  2. Donate an item/service for the silent auction at the VIP Party.
  3. Purchase a $10 ticket to attend the VIP Party at 1638 University Boulevard in Jacksonville.

100% of the proceeds from this event will benefit Healing Hands – a non-profit organization that provides access to crisis intervention, case coordination, and medical services for at-risk children in Jacksonville and surrounding areas. More commonly known as the Northeast Florida Child Protection Team, Healing Hands is a local organization comprised of physicians, psychologists, nurses and other medical professionals who diagnose cases of childhood physical and sexual abuse. The VIP party is open to everyone who wishes to make a minimum donation of $10 per person – although larger donations will be accepted and much appreciated. There will be no charge of admission for children 10 and under. The party will include hors d'oeuvres, a celebratory glass of champagne, soda, cake, live entertainment, and an appearance by Jacksonville Jaguars' mascot, Jaxson De Ville. Attendees will also have an opportunity to take part in a raffle for great prizes and bid on special items and services in the silent auction.

"We love to celebrate our anniversary by giving back to the community that has supported Woody's so loyally," explains Woody's Bar-B-Q co-founder, Yolanda Mills-Mawman. "In addition to showing our guests a good time each year during our Spare Rib Eating Contest, we love the fact that we can raise funds to support a cause that's near and dear to our hearts. We hope to be busting at the seams during our VIP Party and have tables full of major contenders for the title of Spare Rib Eating Champion 2014 so we can break last year's record for funds raised on behalf of Healing Hands."

Held in conjunction with the festivities at the "Original" Woody's Bar-B-Q on University Boulevard in Jacksonville, several additional franchise locations will also be taking part in the Spare Rib Eating Contest this year. If not attending the event at the University Boulevard location, those interested in taking part in the contest on July 26 are encouraged to sign up at a participating Woody's Bar-B-Q:

The winner will be awarded a $150 Q Card, and the runner-up will receive a $50 Q Card. The 2013 Spare Rib Eating Champion was Joe La Rue, who managed to devour an astounding 21 ribs at Woody's Bar-B-Q Palatka within a 5-minute time span.
