Roetzel Of Counsel James O'Reilly Endows Scholarship Fund for Master of Public Health Degree at University of Cincinnati

August 11, 2014 // Franchising.com // The law firm of Roetzel & Andress is proud of the many legal accomplishments of its attorneys, but is even prouder to announce an important gift made by Of Counsel attorney James O'Reilly of the Cincinnati office. Mr. O'Reilly, a professor at both the College of Law and the College of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati, recently endowed The James O'Reilly International Student Scholarship Fund for the Master of Public Health with a gift of $100,000.

"I have always contended that Jim O'Reilly is a very special man. He is a great FDA attorney, scholar and legal expert in numerous practice areas," said Edgar Asebey-Birkholm, FDA Practice Group manager at Roetzel. "Another great thing about Jim is that he has a big heart. I just think that it is a credit to Roetzel to have people like Jim associated with the firm."

The scholarship will award $25,000 each year to a student from a developing nation who is pursuing a Master of Public Health degree at the University of Cincinnati with the intention of applying that education to the many public health issues faced by the people of developing countries. The first recipient of the scholarship is Maria Nakafeero of Uganda. The story of Ms. Nakafeero's journey to the University of Cincinnati and her dream of improving the health and well-being of fellow Ugandans was recently covered by news channel WCPO of Cincinnati.

Mr. O'Reilly focuses his practice on FDA-regulated products and intellectual property law. His experience includes 24 years as principal regulatory counsel for a large Fortune 500 company, where he worked closely with internal clients and industry coalitions on EPA, FDA, and Congressional matters. Since that time he has actively consulted with various companies, and has been teaching FDA law, public health, and systems of regulation courses at the University of Cincinnati College of Law and its College of Medicine, expanding UC's visibility with 45 texts and more than 200 articles written on issues of safety, liability, and environmental regulation. He has been a guest lecturer/speaker on FDA and criminal regulatory matters at Harvard, George Washington University, Case Western University, Capital, University of Dayton and American University, in addition to many other seminars and conferences.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Mr. O'Reilly is active in many civic organizations, including the Hamilton County Law Library Resources Board, First Suburbs Consortium of Southwest Ohio, the Cincinnati area Community Emergency Response Team, the Legal Aid Society, Volunteer Lawyers for the Poor and the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce.
