Former U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee Counsel Kathleen Rice Brings Cybersecurity and Technology Expertise to FaegreBD

September 04, 2014 // Franchising.com // Faegre Baker Daniels - Kathleen Rice, former counsel for the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has joined the law firm of Faegre Baker Daniels and its public policy division FaegreBD Consulting as counsel and senior director, respectively. She practices out of the firm's South Bend and Washington, D.C. offices.

Rice joins a diverse team of professionals throughout the firm, with strong, well-respected credentials—political, legal, privacy, regulatory and economic. Her addition is part of the firm's strategic focus to expand its cybersecurity and technology capabilities nationally and aligns with the opening of its Silicon Valley office in July 2013 to better serve clients with legal and consulting needs on the West Coast, as well as the East Coast through the firm's Washington, D.C. presence.

As counsel with Faegre Baker Daniels, Rice provides strategic legal advice to corporate and government entities on issues such as data privacy, risk management, cybersecurity and compliance with federal laws and regulations, including the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Her practice focuses on legislative, regulatory and policy matters affecting the information technology industry, and she counsels clients on public policy issues related to intellectual property rights, privacy and telecommunications.

"Issues surrounding the information technology industry are ever-evolving and affect businesses worldwide," said Andrew Humphrey, managing partner at Faegre Baker Daniels. "Our firm is committed to providing skilled counsel to clients, and Kathleen's breadth of experience in both legal and federal affairs builds on our capabilities in this area."

As senior director at FaegreBD Consulting, Rice will focus on serving clients impacted by the escalating public policy debates around data privacy, risk management, cybersecurity and compliance, including issues involving the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

"Kathleen joins a strong team of professionals focused on helping clients navigate policy issues surrounding the information technology industry and many other sectors that are increasingly dependent on these tools to serve their customers, including former U.S. Congresswoman Mary Bono who leads our Tech+ team," said Dave Zook, leader of the firm's consulting group. "Kathleen, Mary and their team are helping clients understand these public policy developments and impact them in ways that help grow the Internet economy and enhance innovation, productivity and security."

Prior to joining the firm, Rice spent nearly 20 years in law enforcement, intelligence and government affairs. As counsel on the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, she provided legal and policy advice to members of Congress on a wide range of national security matters, including cybersecurity, surveillance, data collection and privacy. As assistant general counsel at the FBI, she oversaw all legal aspects of the Bureau's counterterrorism, counterintelligence and cyber undercover operations. During Rice's five years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of Florida, she prosecuted a variety of federal offenses, including narcotics, violent crime, fraud, money laundering and child pornography. She also served as the computer crimes/child pornography coordinator.
