DALLAS - September 23, 2014 - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Tropical Smoothie Café, known for its better-for-you food and smoothies with a tropical twist, will enter the Dallas market after recently signing three franchise agreements in the Dallas area and one in Fort Worth. The rapidly growing franchise plans to develop as many as 40 locations throughout the Dallas area in coming years.
Four total cafés are expected to open in Fort Worth, The Colony, North Dallas and downtown Dallas in early 2015. The Colony location will be owned by husband-and-wife entrepreneurs and Dallas residents Cliff and Kate Holsenbeck. The couple, who were introduced to the brand more than a decade ago while attending college, decided to open a Tropical Smoothie Café location because they believe the healthier food and smoothies will appeal to Dallas residents.
"We couldn’t believe Dallas was a completely untapped market for Tropical Smoothie Café," said Cliff. "We are eager to bring Tropical Smoothie Café’s fresh food and smoothies, which are made with real fruit and vegetables, to the active Dallas community."
Tropical Smoothie Café is currently seeking franchise partners to develop up to 40 locations throughout the Dallas area, including Fort Worth, Plano, Richardson, Grapevine, University Park, Arlington and Garland, among others. Restaurant and food industry experience, though preferred, is not required to open a Tropical Smoothie Café. The 394-unit brand currently has seven cafés throughout the state, including one Houston location.
The local Dallas expansion is part of Tropical Smoothie Café’s overall growth strategy to have 750 units nationwide by 2019. The company has reported healthy growth recently, opening 40 cafés thus far in 2014, and increasing same-store sales by 6.4 percent last year. The company is on track to outpace that same-store sales growth in 2014.
"People across the country are hungry for healthier alternatives and better-for-you food options and we fill that void," said Tropical Smoothie Café CEO Mike Rotondo. "We identified Dallas as a key growth market because of the health-conscious community, warm climate and the strong performance of our other Texas locations."
Tropical Smoothie Café serves fresh, light food, such as salads, wraps and sandwiches, as well as real-fruit and vegetable smoothies. Acting on American’s healthier eating trend, the franchise offers "better-for-you" menu items, including the recently unveiled unBEETable Smoothie, made with whole beets. Tropical Smoothie Café will open its milestone 400th location this year and plans to open 100 cafés in 2015.
By pairing made-to-order smoothies with innovative menu items, Tropical Smoothie Café appeals to a broad consumer base throughout all parts of the day. With system-wide revenue approximately split between smoothie and food purchases, the two-in-one business model has led to strong sales with average unit volumes exceeding $526,000 in 2013.
