Planet Smoothie and Tasti D-Lite Expanding in Southern California

Two New Stores Are Tip of the Iceberg for Smoothie Franchise and Dessert Franchise

LOS ANGELES, CA - (Marketwired - Oct 21, 2014) - Planet Smoothie and Tasti D-Lite, which together have more than 150 locations nationwide, are about to get a whole lot bigger in Southern California. The smoothie franchise, which currently has one store in Arvin, is about to open two more - one in Santa Monica (530 Wilshire Ave. No. 107, Santa Monica 90401), and the other in the Northridge Fashion Center (9301 Tampa Ave., Northridge, CA 91324). The Santa Monica location will also house a Tasti D-Lite - a popular Manhattan dessert franchise.

That's just the beginning. Planet Smoothie and Tasti D-Lite plan to open dozens of locations in Southern California.

"Southern California is a great market for smoothie franchises, and will also be an incredible market for Tasti D-Lite," says Planet Smoothie CEO Peter Holt. "People are educated, have strong incomes and are always on the lookout for places that allow them to enjoy great food that is also nutritionally excellent. Planet Smoothie and Tasti both offer great-tasting items and careful attention to nutrition that make them perfect options for customers."

The smoothie industry generates $2.4 billion in sales annually, according to Mintel, and Planet Smoothie has been an industry leader. Its smoothies typically have less sugar and calories compared with competitors' products, and the company is quick to cater to the evolving health market. In the past six months, it has introduced customers to a line of smoothies with less than 300 calories, as well as to vegetable smoothies.

Tasti D-Lite has been an iconic brand in the Northeast for more than 25 years, and is a favorite spot for celebrities.

Growth focused on Los Angeles County

The owners of the new Santa Monica store - Kanna Sunkara, Ramu Sunkara and Laura Crane - will be spearheading growth for the two brands in Los Angeles County.

"We're excited to bring premium brands here that are far better products that what is currently available in the market," Kanna Sunkara said. "Planet Smoothie and Tasti D-Lite are not sugar bombs, which is how I'd describe some of the brands that are currently here. We think customers will flock to better choices."

The Sunkaras and Crane will be looking for entrepreneurs who are eager to bring healthier options to their communities. They are particularly interested in adding locations in Westlake Village, Los Feliz, Silverlake, Pasadena, Burbank, Arcadia, downtown Los Angeles, Manhattan Beach, Huntington Beach, Hermosa Beach, Palos Verdes and Anaheim.
