November 03, 2014 // Franchising.com // Slim Chickens, a leader in the "better chicken" segment of fast-casual restaurants, will bring its fresh chicken and unparalleled flavor to its first market in Missouri, spearheaded by local operator Adam Herndon. The Independence, Mo., restaurant, located at 4641 South Cochise Ct., is set to open Nov. 10 and is the first of five locations planned for the Kansas City market.
"We made a pledge to offer our customers nothing short of culinary excellence, so we’re very excited to bring Slim Chickens to new customers and territories," said Sam Rothschild, COO of Slim Chickens. "Kansas City has a vibrant culture, and the food scene is unmistakably popular. Opening a Slim Chickens location in the Midwest provides an excellent opportunity for us as a brand, and we’re thrilled to have Adam on board to lead this expansion."
Prior to joining Slim Chickens as an operating partner, Herndon was "born into the restaurant industry," when he began helping his mother wash dishes at a young age at The Pizza Shoppe, a local family-owned pizza parlor. Most recently, he was involved with a national sandwich chain as both a corporate representative and local franchisee, gaining experience that he will bring to the development of Slim Chickens in his home state. After being introduced to the brand through a college friend, Herndon traveled to Arkansas to experience the concept for himself and was blown away by the restaurant chain’s success rate and national expansion plans. Herndon will focus his efforts on building strong brand recognition throughout the Kansas City area as more Slim Chickens restaurants open in Missouri.
"Slim Chickens is a great addition to Kansas City because there’s nothing quite like it currently available," Herndon said. "The area around the restaurant is developing quickly, and I’m confident the community will warmly welcome a little soul and Southern hospitality to the "Show-Me" state.
Focusing on fresh chicken, the brand has developed a niche in its sector of the restaurant industry for product quality that can’t be found anywhere else. With fresh ingredients and minimal freezer space in every restaurant, Slim Chickens honors a commitment to homemade recipes and strong supplier partnerships, ensuring guests can feel good about the food they eat. The down-home Southern brand offers diners hand-breaded or grilled chicken tenders, paired with a choice of eight handmade dipping sauces or seven handmade wing sauces for exceptional flavor that has earned admiration from both customers and critics. If guests want to switch it up, Slim Chickens also offers fresh salads, wraps, and chicken and waffles. To offset the savory side of the menu, rotating dessert flavors served in mason jars are available.
The 2,922-square-foot store is the prototype for aggressive national expansion, and is one of 14 new restaurants slated to open in the next 12 months across the country. The brand has seen great success in the last several years, expanding from Arkansas into Texas and Oklahoma and emerging as the national player to establish fast-casual dining’s "better chicken" segment.
