February 17, 2015 // Franchising.com // Cottage Village, NY - Indoor trampoline parks have become big business. According to Tracy Sarris, Executive Vice-president of the International Association of Trampoline Parks, an organization founded in 2013 to formulate best practices for safety in the industry and promote continued growth: "It's difficult to keep track of the number of parks because so many have opened just this year."
"We're getting inquiries from new or potential parks nearly every day and more are opening every month," Sarris said. She estimates the number of facilities worldwide at 300, up from 35 to 40 three years ago - an increase of more than 700 percent!
The reason for the explosive growth is the wide range of ages the activity appeals to. Everything from 2 year olds getting their first jumping legs to 60 year olds taking trampoline aerobics classes are participating. The demand for birthday parties, schools, camps and corporate events just adds to the tremendous success of the business model.
But as trampoline park openings increase, many franchisees do close down in short order, due to poor management, over-rapid franchise expansion, and poor safety controls.
Bounce! Trampoline was just this year listed on America's Best Franchises site. According to Bounce! Trampoline Sports co-founder Michael Gross, "We set ourselves apart by slowly and carefully choosing and grooming our franchisees, making sure we have the right location, physical space and management team in place. We have developed a distinctive brand name and image, with a superior safety program and specific management style. The engineering and attention to detail incorporated into all our franchisee's facilities is cutting edge and exceeds the currently developed ASTM safety standards. We are, without a doubt, the most unique and innovative indoor trampoline franchise brand opportunity in the world today."
It's not uncommon for companies to get overly ambitious in their franchising plans, as many want to grow faster than their own capital allows. Some seem almost desperate to penetrate prime markets before competitors can.
As many businesses discover too late, rapid expansion doesn't always mean success when building a franchise. When growth trumps all other goals, such as grooming competent leaders, controlling costs, picking prime locations or building a customer base, a franchiser's execution can turn sloppy.
"We believe very strongly that a focus on leading edge technology and development of new programs sets us apart. Bounce! Trampoline Sports was the first to offer an indoor trampoline bungee jump, and first to offer a regulation volleyball court which can be transformed into a junior soccer field for kids parties. We are unique in offering innovative nutrition and other health related programs tailored for specific age groups, from young kids who learn about the importance of eating healthy (Bounce! teams up with local farmers and nutritionists for this), to competitions geared toward teens that help counter obesity and are in line with NFL Play 60 and Michelle Obama's 'Let's Move' campaign. Our facilities also offer special needs programs for children with sensory issues providing a community based service," adds Mr. Gross.
Growth is driven at Bounce! Trampoline Sports by its superior safety record, attention to detail, cleanliness and innovative programs for different age groups, but most of all by the fact that jumping is a great way to exercise and burn lots of calories while having FUN! NASA even completed a study years ago on rebounding and declared it "the most effective and efficient form of exercise yet devised by man."
