SurePayroll Small Business Scorecard®: 75% of Small Business Owners Help Employees with Personal Matters

Small businesses tend to be collaborative, family environments, survey finds.

May 29, 2015 // Franchising.com // GLENVIEW, IL - Free legal work, paying for family members’ hospital bills and repairing an employee’s dryer are just a few of the ways in which small business employers have helped their staffs on personal matters, according to the May 2015 SurePayroll Small Business Scorecard.

  • 75% of small business owners say they have helped employees with personal matters.

“We got some incredible responses to our survey from small business owners who really went the extra mile for their employees. In one case, the owner arranged for a moving van and a support team to help a female employee in an abusive relationship move to a new apartment,” said SurePayroll General Manager Andy Roe. “Another owner told us a story about how they caught an employee stealing equipment. Instead of calling the police, they gave the employee an opportunity to make amends with weekly payroll deductions, and that person became one of their most loyal, hardworking employees.”

The Scorecard features survey data with insights from small and microbusiness owners, primarily those with 1-10 employees. SurePayroll Inc. is a leader in providing online payroll to small businesses nationwide since 2000.

Small business owners also shared insights into their company cultures, how they handle conflict, dress codes and more in the SurePayroll survey, reporting the following:

Company Culture

  • 61% described the culture as collaborative – an open and friendly place where people care a lot about each other.

Handling Conflicts in the Workplace

  • 73% said disagreements are always handled calmly and professionally.

Small Business Owner’s Relationship with Employees

  • 49% of small business owners said they treat employees like family.

Dress Code

  • 50% have a casual dress code where jeans and even t-shirts are allowed.

An infographic with all the data from the SureParyoll Scorecard, including more on the small business economy, is available on the SurePayroll Blog.

As the first economic indicator created by a payroll company, the SurePayroll Scorecard has provided a monthly look at national hiring and paycheck trends since October 2004. SurePayroll's Scorecard compiles data from small businesses nationwide, and exclusively reflects the trends affecting the nation's "microbusinesses" - those with 1-10 employees. The average business reflected has six employees.
