Proud Father Grows Certapro Painters of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky with Son, Daughter

June 18, 2015 // Franchising.com // MILFORD, Ohio - When David Rankin founded his CertaPro Painters of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky business 21 years ago he could not have anticipated the familial shape the company would take. First operating his business out of his basement, the franchise of North America’s largest painting company has grown to become a family affair, with daughter Hannah Abeyta née Rankin and son David Rankin Jr. working with their father to provide painting services to Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati from their office at 25 Whitney Dr., Suite 102.

Though initially resistant to the idea of joining their father, Rankin said his children opted to give it a shot and liked what they found. Hannah joined CertaPro Painters eight years ago after high school and found she was a natural, David Jr. joined in 2013, also following his high school graduation.

“I think the thing that I find so special is that I never had to recruit Hannah and David, but rather they asked to be a part of us,” said Rankin. “In a world full of young people that feel they are entitled to high pay, weekends off and an ‘easy path,’ Hannah and Davy break that mold. They have been paid what everyone is paid and yet their work ethic and drive matches or exceeds that of many workers I know.”

Rankin’s children hold positions that demand a great deal of responsibility, but they got there by putting the same time in as everyone else. Abeyta is the general manager of operations, moving up from the position of administrative assistant, responsible for overseeing all residential and commercial operations. David Rankin Jr., too, began as an assistant, working now in commercial operations, in charge of scheduling and all commercial business.
Working alongside co-owner Regis Robbins, who joined the business in 2014, the Rankin family demonstrates the value of a business run by a cohesive team. Not just, said Rankin, for the business benefits, but for their relationship as well.

“I would say our relationship has matured because my kids now understand what I truly do for a living,” said Rankin. “They have seen the joys, pains, challenges, successes, failures and everything in between in a family owned business. In a situation where we could both let each other down, we have all chosen to rise and fight for each other. I guess we all understand each other on a level that we never have before. They are both truly my pride and joy.”
