Alamo Drafthouse Announces Isaac Shumway As Beverage Director At New Mission's "Bear Vs Bull" Bar

July 22, 2015 // Franchising.com // San Francisco, CA - Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is pleased to announce Isaac Shumway as the Beverage Director at Alamo Drafthouse New Mission theater. Shumway will oversee all drinks for the theater and the adjoining bar, Bear Vs Bull. The bar will open with the Alamo Drafthouse New Mission in the Fall.

The name of the bar, Bear Vs Bull, references San Francisco's Gold Rush era, when settlers used to lasso California grizzly bears and pit them against El Torro Spanish bulls in the Mission District. The 1932 art deco architectural details in the bar, originally designed by San Francisco's legendary Nasser Brothers, have been fully restored. Stepping inside Bear Vs. Bull will be like stepping back into San Francisco history. The Nasser Brothers also built the nearby Historic Castro Theater.

"I am absolutely thrilled that Isaac is joining our Alamo family as Beverage Director at the New Mission," says League. "Isaac has a true passion for quality, innovative drinks, is a fellow movie lover at heart and has a deep knowledge of the history of the Mission District. I can't wait to experience the menu he will be crafting for both the theater and Bear Vs. Bull."

Shumway will be curating a diverse, rotating selection of California wines and 28 local draft beers. These will accompany nitro cold brew from De La Paz Coffee and hibiscus ice tea, which will also be on tap. The menu will also offer adult milkshakes, blended drinks and Shumway's innovative signature cocktails.

"What will really make this bar incredible is the array of talent behind the bar. Bear Vs Bull will have some of the best bartenders in San Francisco on staff to serve guests a favorite drink or guide them in trying something new from our extensive lineup," says Shumway. "My style has always been classic. For me, I take pleasure in drinking simple drinks, made with a lot of care and technique." He adds, "This bar is not about what we serve. I want this bar to be about the great feeling and experience you get while hanging out with us".

A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, Isaac Shumway spent time in Paris, France, after graduation. He worked at Taillevent, a three-star Michelin restaurant, before returning to the U.S. to cook at French Laundry in Napa. Shumway has also bartended at a number of notable bars in San Francisco including Alembic, Bourbon and Branch, and Heaven's Dog. Most recently, Shumway was Bar Director at Tosca. He helped to reopen the restaurant in 2013. During his time in San Francisco Shumway has been mentored by legendary barmen including Erik Adkins, Bar Director at the nationally acclaimed Slanted Door, and Daniel Hyatt, former Bar Manager at The Alembic and Roka Akor. Adkins even recommended Shumway for the position at Tosca.
