Seattle Sutton’s Healthy Eating Celebrates 30 Years of Helping People Improve Their Health and Lose Weight

August 24, 2015 // Franchising.com // Ottawa, Ill. – Seattle Sutton’s Healthy Eating (SSHE), the premier freshly prepared meal provider nationwide, is proud to announce its 30-year anniversary celebration on August 26. The company will open its doors to the public and provide tours of its kitchen facility.

The day’s events will kick off with opening remarks by company founder and family matriarch, Seattle Sutton, who will also introduce family, employees, clients and business associates who have supported the company over the years.

Attendees will have an opportunity to win prizes, tour the kitchen facility and take home a delicious, healthy SSHE lunch. The anniversary celebration will run from 11 AM to 1 PM at its kitchen facility located at 611 E. Stevenson Road, Ottawa, Ill. 61350.

“I’m often asked if I ever imagined this to be so successful when I set out 30 years ago to help people with convenient, healthy meals. I always answer, yes, without a doubt. I am a very optimistic person and knew this is what people needed to improve their health,” said Seattle Sutton, registered nurse and founder of Seattle Sutton’s Healthy Eating.

Sutton continued, “But what I did not know back then was that my children and grandchildren would join me. That -- along with the countless stories of how we’ve helped people regain their health -- brings me joy and motivates me to continue to do what I do.”

A great deal has changed since 1985 when the company first opened for business as Diet Carry-Out. The first week of business there were 9 orders of 21 meals (189 meals). Since then, the company has produced nearly 100 million meals to date, including through a franchise kitchen.

Meals were produced in the early days in rented space from a catering company consisting of approximately 1,000 square feet. Today, the Ottawa, Ill. facility spans more than 30,000 square feet of production space and produces approximately 3 million meals a year.

History of How it All Started

The idea was born from Sutton’s work as a registered nurse in her late physician husband’s medical practice. They often counseled patients on the importance of eating a healthy, well-balanced diet. They were more than 50 years ahead of their time.

At the age of 53, Sutton decided with only $1,000 and 3 employees that she’d make a go of this idea after counseling a patient with type II diabetes. He explained if she did the work for him, then he would follow it. At that moment, the idea was born to provide freshly prepared meals to people just like him. The only thing she knew for certain was the people wanted and needed healthy meals, in order to improve their health. And, if she did it, she had to make the healthiest meals possible.

Sutton continued to grow and develop her business while continuing to work full-time as a nurse in her husband’s medical practice until he retired from practice in 1991. Often asked how she did it, and she always replies, “Nobody ever died of lack of sleep!”

Today, the company grosses $15 million a year (excluding franchise sales) and employs 49 full-time employees and 14 family members.

Seattle Sutton’s Healthy Eating Meals

SSHE offers a healthy, convenient way of eating with freshly prepared, nutritionally balanced, calorie and portion-controlled meals. SSHE meal plans follow the guidelines of health and nutrition experts and meals are low in fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium restricted.

SSHE meals do not contain:

  • Artificial sweeteners, food dyes or harmful additives as preservatives
  • High fructose corn syrup
  • Hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils (trans fat)
  • Hormones or antibiotics in poultry products
