Pizza Pizza Limited: Bystanders Important in Effort to End Bullying in Canada

Parenting Expert Dr. Karyn Gordon Partners With Pizza Pizza for Third Annual Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week School Tour

TORONTO, ONTARIO - (Marketwired - Nov. 12, 2015) - Dr. Karyn Gordon, a parenting and relationship expert in North America, will deliver her interactive presentation themed "Friendships Unplugged: The Power of the Bystander" to Ontario students during Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week. This is the third consecutive year that Dr. Gordon has partnered with Pizza Pizza for this school tour, which will make stops at five Ontario schools, November 15 to 21.

As part of an integrated campaign by the Ontario Ministry of Education, Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week helps promote safe schools and creates positive learning environments through a broad discourse on bullying. Schools across Canada will organize bullying awareness activities and for the specially selected schools, Dr. Gordon's interactive talk will be memorable for students in grades 1-8 who get to experience it.

"We're working with schools that participate in Pizza Pizza's School Lunch Program to bring them Dr. Karyn Gordon to help spread this very important message," said Pat Finelli, Chief Marketing Officer at Pizza Pizza. "It's important for children to know that they have the power to end the cycle of bullying, even if they aren't the target."

Students will be shown how to build healthy friendships and how to deal with conflict effectively including understanding the power of the bystander. The workshop begins with a two-minute video, after which Dr. Gordon turns the assembly into a popular mock "talk-show" format, selecting four volunteers from the audience to portray four friends. The short but powerful skit helps students to identify with one of the different characters.

Among the lessons are:

  • How self-esteem is reflected in the way friends treat each other
  • What genuine respect truly looks like
  • What bullying says about a person's self-esteem
  • How to communicate effectively and respectfully during conflict
  • Clues to finding a great friend
  • Three practical ways to build healthy friendship

Dr. Gordon's scheduled school visits, include the following:

Date   School   City
November 16   St. Cecilia Catholic School   Toronto
November 16   The Laurel School   Toronto
November 17   Portage View Public School   Barrie
November 18   Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Elementary School   Hamilton
November 19   Elgin Street Public School   Ottawa

*please note these events are not open to the public, media must RSVP their presence via PR contacts listed below.
"Bullying is an important issue among Canada's youth," said Dr. Gordon. "It is something that many young people struggle with on a day-to-day and, like anything else, dealing with bullies and bullying situations is something that needs to be taught."

The Canadian Institute of Health Research states that at least one in three adolescent students in Canada have reported being bullied, and 47 per cent of Canadian parents report having a child who is a victim of bullying.
